Best Book I've Read That'll Get You Up to Speed on Building a Business Case
Hands down: this is the best book I've read about building a business case. It's full of practical tips to help even neophytes go through the process of presenting a sound business case to an executive review committee. The authors--Amy Gallo and Raymond Sheen--bring a direct approach and walk you through the process of persuading higher ups to seriously consider your viable business solution. Here's my synopsis of the book: First, identify the problem. Second, gather input from SMEs. Third, consider alternatives. Fourth, crunch numbers. This includes calculating the ROI, NPV, IRR, payback period, break-even point, and so forth. Fifth, consider the risks. And finally, present your business case to the appropriate execs.I loved Amy and Raymond's insight. They also give steps for handling push-back and tips to improve your chances of getting buy-in. This book's worth the investment. It's a definitive guide. It's a practical guide. And I'm better prepared to recommend solutions because of the insights gleaned from this book.Kudos HBR

You can never go wrong with anything from HBR! I used this as background for myself on a consulting project and it provided the precise information I needed to guide my client. There are supplementary ppt decks that help you build your deck.

While generally a good guide it puts the onus on you to come up with much of the content, whereas I would have preferred to see a lot more example. Tips like involving other members of the team, and communication are obvious. Then it instructs you to search out your individual company's format for financial reporting and gives no examples of type or science behind it. Moreover it basically just says you'll figure it out.

Provides ideas on how to present your business case and help determine what you should look for and how to build a presentation that will likely be well received. I also really enjoy how the book is written -- it's not dry and its engaging. A great job aid to grab really quick before presenting to business leaders.
