Top quality. You get what you pay for.
I already have a Domke J3 and got this larger J2 model for a bigger camera. I also ordered a Domke 720-250D main compartment insert. This insert fits this bag perfectly and is a necessity, IMHO, if you want to carry an oversized DSLR, like my gripped Nikon D700, with a medium sized lens mounted, as well as two other large f2.8 zooms. The 720-250D has the additional advantage that it also provides a tablet compartment: My 10 inch ipad in a slim case fits neatly between the insert wall and the bag's front wall, sealed in by the insert's velcro attaching strip at the top (also works between the back walls if you prefer). An advantage of the ballistic nylon Domke J series is the full padding of the end pockets, which activates them for carrying lenses, camera bodies or flash guns with no drop-off in protection compared to the main compartment. The canvas Domkes have unpaded end pockets, which downgrades their protection. My Domke J3 is going on 10 years old and can hardly be distinguished, wear-wise, from this brand-new J2. I've tried just about every brand of bag. Two stick out head and shoulders above the rest: Domke and Think Tank. Both expensive because made in USA, but unbeatable for ruggedness and overall quality.

Overall like and they are better made than they used to ...
Overall like and they are better made than they used to be. I wished they were deeper (wider?) front to back. Mine is set up to carry two Nikon D810s - one with a 35/1.4 and the other with the 85/1.4 - with accessories in the side pockets. Cameras are placed in two large Domke "4-up" pockets with dividers removed. This works well except it stretches the bag about an inch deeper than it is designed for, it also doesn't use the vertical depth so the bag sort of collapses around the cameras. Looks OK but could ride better, I haven't found a better alternative since the messenger bag choices don't sit well being top heavy (camera lens down). The metal clips on the top flap will probably ding my cameras sooner or later but I am careful with them.

Best bag I've seen or used
This is a great bag. Tough, protective, and clean-looking. I'm a photojournalist and needed something to carry at least a body multiple lenses, a flash and lots of other pieces and parts. This bag does all I need it to. I purchased the Domke 720-250D insert because I wanted a better layout where the camera could have a lens on it and I'd still have room for 2 other lenses, flash and audio recorder in the main area for quick access. From my experience, that is the best setup for me, others might prefer something else.Domke 720-250D DSLR Camera Insert (Green)

Domke Makes the Best Bags
I know it's nuts, but I took a very long time for this purchase. Cameras? Lenses? No problem... I know exactly what I want. Bags? A different story. I looked at a lot of bags by a lot of manufacturers, but came back to Domke (which makes the bag I was replacing). Domke makes a great bag: very sturdy, well built, flexible, fairly light, easy to carry, easy to access your camera. If I was traveling a lot and was more interested in protection, I'd perhaps have made another choice. But for those of us who want a bag that provides a lot of protection and organization and is great for shooters (easy to grab your camera), this is the bag for you. Highly recommended. Would definitely buy this bag again...

The last working bag for photographers...
I don’t need to carry a laptop or any of the other crap that the bag companies feel I want to haul. I don’t need an organizer suite in the bag. I don’t need a water bottle holder. I need to carry lenses and a spare body. I need a bag to work out of. A bag that I can actually work out of while on an assignment, not sit in a coffee shop posing with my Leica.I have used Domke Bags for decades. In need of a new bag, I looked at other bags, but quickly realized that it was futile to find anything even close to the practicality of a Domke bag. It appears that this particular bag, the Domke J-2 has been discontinued, it is no longer listed on the Domke website, and maybe dealers are selling what the have at a higher price than the J-1. I may just buy another before they’re gone...

Minimalist Camera Bag
The Domke J-2 is a simple well designed bag. It has removeable padded inserts and bottom stiffener. I can carry a digital camera body, 2 prime lenses, 1 normal zoom, 2 portable strobes, pocket wizards and various cables, and batteries with some room left over. The construction of this bag is extremely rugged. I have the "Ballistic" material which seems invincible to me. The material is also waterproofed so in the rain the water runs right off -- as long as you close the pockets and top correctly, your gear will be safe. One of the things I like about the Domke bags is the modular compartment inserts you can buy to configure your bag how you need it. Let's say you have several configurations for your kit depending on your assignments. You can preset some inserts with the proper gear and store them in your drybox. When you need to swap out the kits, just remove and replace.
