Very useful book for decorating or custom construction
My husband and I are building a custom colonial. This book is loaded with helpful pictures, and it is even broken down into sections on staircases, doors, trim work, etc. This is a great reference tool for me because I can just point to a picture and tell my builder "See, that's my idea" rather than trying to describe it to him. Even though this book is a few years old, colonial style has been in America since the 1600's. I don't think this book being a few years old is going to change such a longstanding, traditional style.

My most used book...
My husband and I recently built a new old house...We were shooting for an 1830 half cape that looked as though it had been remodeled in 1860. We started with some good plans, and then went to work on the 'little stuff'. I found myself flagging page after page to show our contractor. The success of a reproduction is in the tiny details. Add them all up and you get a new house that looks old. (this window trim, this bathroom sink, this eave trim, this mantle, etc.) This book was one of our two favorite sources of ideas, and this one was used the most. The entire book was full of what I would call New England Type Architecture. As we built, we used bits and pieces of Sturbridge, plus details from countless books. This book spent months on the construction site with probably 60 or 70 tags. As the look was accomplished, the flag came off. This book is still sitting on the coffee table with two flags remaining...the library shelves, and the front steps. Getting it right is a long process, but Treena Crochet has a great eye. If you really do want to creat a classic interior, this is a must have.

Good coffee table book...
What it lacks in substance, it makes up for with pretty pictures. For historical zealots (such as myself) this book will leave you hungry for more information about Colonial homes and their historical roots, but for what it is, it's pretty decent. This book has good artwork, clean pictures and an interesting array of different Colonial styles. That being said, I was profoundly disappointed in the book's lack of images and information on the ubiquitous Colonial Revival. That was my reason for buying this book, as I wanted to learn more about that style of housing. "Colonial Style" had very little on this incredibly popular genre (and derivation) of domestic architecture. Then again, I am a purist. If you want some decorating ideas and like to look at pretty pictures of old Williamsburg-era Colonials, you'll love it.

A Standout Among it's Peers
I've read literally dozens of books with similar titles and layout, but this one is a standout on the shelf. It does a fantastic job of bridging the gap between ultra-authentic reproduction and modern home construction. The ideas presented within are highly buildable with readily-available materials and would be comfortable to live in.Buy this book if you're looking for colors, moldings, living room, and kitchen ideas for a new home or remodel.

Definitely colonial styling for new house construction
Interesting design concepts to make the new house look historic. Published a while ago, it’s material is dated if you are following the current modern design. But I suppose you wouldn’t be looking for this design style, then. Has some good uses of colonial colors, as well.

Learning about Colonial houses
I don't think you would say this is reading for pleasure, but it is certainly full from cover to cover with good information about Colonial housing. I don't pretend to be an expert but it sure told me things I didn't know! For instance, I assumed Colonial houses were white because most of what you see reproduced are white - not so: NONE of them were white but rather natural colors easily accessible at that time period. Okay, not rocket science but interesting information. Read to learn.

Great Ideas
Found this when searching for design and decorating ideas for updating and freshening up my little cape house. Love it. Has definitely helped me focus on elements that will yield big impact while maintaining the style continuity I'm after. Beautifully produced book that I would highly recommend.

Great Book but ....
Pages had been torn out ( more than 10 ). Had I known, I would have bought a better copy.
