Christian Romance
This story is about Anna, originally from Holland, who if I remember correctly is around 10 when she arrives in America with her father. Anna's father becomes ill and does not survive long after they arrive. Her mother, who was from America, who I believe her father met on a previous trip to America, died giving birth to Anna in Holland (apparently her parents married and went to Holland). Anna has to go live with an uncle in America for around six years when she escapes his home. On her journey she is taken by Indians and meets White Eagle (Jean-Marc). White Eagle's mother is an Indian and his father was French. White Eagle has issues with white men due to an attack on his Indian family and friends. I liked the storyline of the book, but I think there may have been too much going on, and from what I can tell Anna is 16 when she meets White Eagle, but I don't know if it mentioned the age of White Eagle. I think the story would have been better if Anna had been at least 18, but perhaps I missed a couple of years of her life and she was an adult when they met. Anna keeps apologizing for various issues, but White Eagle does not. I do not mind a strong male character, but I believe there were times White Eagle owed Anna apology's. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a clean (there is not any detailed love scenes (mainly kisses), but I feel this book would be better for an adult) Christian Romance, but it was ok to good for me. I would give it 3.5 stars. I really enjoyed the first book I read by Sandi Rog "Out of the Ashes", so please do not keep this review from reading this book or "Out of the Ashes", which is one of my most favorite books I have ever read.

Left me breathless! A MUST READ!
I have been dying for a story like this one, especially in Christian fiction, where a woman gets kidnapped by Indians! Not only is Walks Alone passionate and romantic, but it tells a story about America's past that gives Native Americans a voice, a voice that must be heard! That was the author's goal (according to her note to the readers in the beginning), and what a powerful voice she gave, all wrapped up in a believable romantic tale that will grip your heartstrings days, weeks and months after you turn the last page. Not only do we learn the "courting practices" of the Cheyenne and their traditional practices and beliefs, etc, but we become so connected to these two characters and their unique cultures, we find ourselves rooting for them as they defy racial prejudices of the times. The pioneer Anna is desperate to get to Denver City where she was supposed to settle with her father who has died six years prior. Settling in Denver City has always been their goal ever since they left the Netherland shores. But when she finally has a chance to make it there on her own, she gets kidnapped by Indians, and the dashing White Eagle has plenty of secrets of his own. This was a wonderful read, with the realities of the Indian wars, to the love and passion that can be found in such turbulent circumstances. And like I said, I've been hoping for a book like this for a long time!Deeply woven characters, beautiful descriptions of the settings, and a powerful plot.Walks Alone is a book you don't want to miss!

Powerful and Romantic
Walks Alone by Sandi Rog has one of the most powerful openings I've read in a long time. If you're into historical fiction, then you may be familiar with the Sand Creek Massacre. Rog puts you right in the middle of it. You hear the bullets whizzing by, the screams of the dying, the cries of the orphaned children. Going forward, you have an incredible amount of empathy with our hero, White Eagle. He's "a man with a boot in one world and a moccasin in the other." But it is definitely the savage side of him who kidnaps Anna (who becomes Walks Alone). The attraction is immediate and believable. Rog does a magnificent job of taking the reader into the Cheyenne world, but Anna's torn: she's on her way to Denver. Should she let herself fall in love with a big, strong, handsome, kind Indian brave and forget about the White Man's World? There's enough sexual tension and action to keep the story moving and it is definitely enjoyable. I have one complaint, though. The ending of the book seems to get a little muddled. Anna's petulance begins to grate a bit and, well, I won't spoil the ending. I'll merely suggest that it was about five or six pages too long. But having said that, if you like your historical fiction set out West, if you love Native Americans portrayed as the strong, graceful people they are are, if you love a good romance, I highly recommend Walks Alone!

Amazing experience
Sandi Rog has masterfully created a love story that explores the turbulence and intrigue of Native American history, and in particular of the Cheyenne tribe. Sandi captured my interest from the beginning, bringing to life characters that I immediately related to and empathised with. White Eagle had me mesmerised! The cross-cultural dynamic was especially appealing for me as I am from a different culture to that of my husband and I have mostly lived among his culture.I loved the way White Eagle did not back down from who He was. He identified as a Cheyenne, and his restored relationship with God transformed his way of life, rather than having him turning his back on it.Just in White Eagle's character alone, Sandi skilfully conveys just how complicated we are as humans by exploring ideas such as conflicting cultural identity, our relationships with those in our communities and social groups, and with those we love. This story moved me deeply and I highly recommend it to anyone. Sandi Rog has joined my list of favourite authors and I hope she writes more on this theme.
