Excellent Excellent Excellent Book!
This Ruth Stout No-Work Gardening book is an old old reference book I purchased in 1975. I am an organic gardener of vegetables, flowers and fruit trees and read this book over and over many years ago to comprehend and understand the techniques of Ruth's gardening secrets. I learned a great deal and my growing abilities grew and grew as a result. I live in the Houston area and lost most of my gardening reference books in the terrible Hurricane Harvey flooding in 2017. So I was delighted when I found this book, which was published in 1971, on Amazon! Thank you to the third-party seller that offered this book for sale and shipped it so quickly! Thank you!

Great and must have reference for any gardener no matter what your experience or no matter how big of a garden you have
Good information never become old or outdated. The book may be old but the information is relevant more today than when she started. If you are tired of toiling in your garden, stop, get a copy of this book, read it carefully and really listen to what she has to say. You'll be tempted to double dig or turn over the soil but the result of her method should be more than enough to keep you from digging and turning over the soil. And its not just her result. The method is being used by many new generation of market gardeners, farmers and backyard gardener. They all get the same fantastic results. I own a small farm and this is one of the books I would highly recommend.

Classic read for organic enthusiasts and permies.
This is a great old book written by a great old gal during a simpler time. I received a used copy in good condition (considering the fact that it's older than I am by a decade). I got this as a gift for my newlywed brother and his sweet wife, who wishes to have an epic organic garden but doesn't have the time to invest in garden maintenance. This edition looks identical to the one that was loaned to me by a farmer I worked for years ago, and its vintage 1970's hardback cover brought back fond memories of Ms. Stout's pearls of gardening wisdom. The book features some photos of the author in the garden, but is otherwise sparse in illustrations. Don't expect diagrams of garden layouts or of mulching techniques. But DO expect an easy read full of great ideas on how to save yourself some work by letting Mother Nature do the work for you. This one's a classic and a keeper.

A must for all gardeners!
I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in gardening or anyone who gardens. Although the concept was developed by Ruth decades ago, it is 100% relevant for today's gardeners can be applied to any level of gardening. Ruth's personality comes alive in her writing and I felt more like I was getting gardening lesson with a close relative of yesteryear than merely reading a book. I have already recommended this book to gardening friends and will refer to its wisdom and advice many times in the future.

Hat's off Ruth!
A pioneer in the field of weedless gardening. I applaud this lady, and have been using straw in my garden ever since reading this, so many good tips, and she's really quite hilarious. Such fun to read on a cold winter's night, while daydreaming about spring. She's a smart cookie! Check out other books of hers, some out of print, but well worth reading. I miss this sort of humor, and honest writing. Hat's off Ruth!

My soil is very heavy with lots of clay - I have good dirt now and it's incredibly easy to keep up ...
Changed my whole idea of gardening and saved me hundreds of $$ on a new tiller. Definitely the way to go especially if you haveany physical limitations. 2015 was my 2nd full year of doing the mulch garden. I won't return to the old, back breaking ways. My soilis very heavy with lots of clay - I have good dirt now and it's incredibly easy to keep up with the weeding. You should try this method. If you are skeptical, then try it in one area for a couple of years and see how you like it. It's also a great way to increase your garden size or make a new garden bed for a specific crop. I like to start this time of year....mulch, mulch, mulch....about 12-18" thick. Let the weather do it's magic, thenpull it apart and drop your little seeds in next spring. Oh, and I had great root crops this year. Thanks, Mrs. Stout

Interesting...
It's book full of old magazine articles written by Ruth Stout, whom I'd never heard of until I bought the book. I found it to be interesting, if not repetitive and somewhat contradictory. Still a look into the past and not a bad read if you understand the format.

Ruth Stout has some good basic gardening ideas
Very interesting book with good gardening info. Put Ruth Stout in on YouTube and watch a video interview of her from decades ago. If this is interesting and fun to you then this may be a book you would enjoy. If the YT video did not appeal to you then forget the book.

So much more than just Mulch, Mulch, Mulch!!
First of all, the book is in almost perfect condition, and for being a first edition, that's pretty amazing! Just one or two very small, barely noticeable strawberry stains, but that just means it was used for what it was meant to be used for! The inside is in pristine condition! As for the content of the book, I've seen other reviews that suggest they can sum it up by saying "Mulch, mulch, mulch!" Obviously, they didn't read the book very thoroughly, because there's so much more in these pages than I could ask for! Every paragraph has a little tidbit of information and lessons learnt by Ruth Stout. I've already rid a plant of a pest problem I was struggling with thanks to her, and I've had the book for 4 days! So glad I bought this!
