Build A BeltReplacement 1.5" Wide Buckles for Military Style Belts Assorted Metal Finishes

I had surgery earlier this year and found my normal D shaped belts and buckles with pins and holes was rubbing on me the wrong way. I decided I needed a more stretchable belt and a buckle that would not extend past the belt itself to rub on me and provide some tension relief when I'm sitting.I ordered a pair of elastic vinyl web belts that came with plastic flip top buckles from another vendor. The belts were good as they stretched when I was seated and the plastic buckles didn't rub me the wrong way. But the 3 piece plastic buckles they provided had only 4 little plastic tabs holding the whole thing together. I could not keep the buckles tight because they friction closed on the belt with bendable plastic nubs, not teeth. They would come loose from both ends of the belts if I tried to loosen or tighten them.So I found this vendor who had a wide variety of buckle types. I learned that I didn't like the flip top ones because I couldn't easily adjust the tension or unbuckle just one end without both ends falling out of the buckle. I noticed the metal Boy Scout style buckles this company sold with the friction pin and ordered two.I first noticed that these buckles came with the little metal belt cover to make belt insertion easier. It also keeps the cut belt end from fraying. Nice add-on part and I wish they would have put two in with each buckle as some belts come with neither end covered.The black, all metal buckles are much more sturdy than the plastic ones that came with the belts. And they stay in line with the belt without extending over its edges much. This helps stop the rubbing. They also have real metal teeth on the fixed side of the belt that bite into the belt and clip into place. They don't let go without opening them with a pry tool which is what one side of a belt should be like.The other end with the little belt cover very easily slips into the buckle and through the belt loops without resistance. You pull the belt a little tighter than you want and push the little friction roller against it and pull lightly as if you are loosening it. The friction roller pulls hard against the belt and locks it tightly into place. When it catches correctly it holds the belt very firmly in place. But I did notice it takes a few tries to get it at the right tension. I probably will get the hang of this a little better with more practice.When you want to loosen or remove your belt and buckle, you push the belt ends towards the buckle and pull back on the friction roller and it slips very easily free. While wearing it, your waste pushes out slightly on the mechanism all the time and it doesn't come undone accidentally. Also when you remove the belt, the buckle stays attached to one end. The flip tops I tried would come apart at both ends as soon as one side was released. I don't want my buckles coming off both sides of the belt. So these buckles hold in place just like I want.If you need to resize your belt to smaller, figure out how big you need the belt to be. Add about 4-6" to this length to leave some belt to go under the loops when tight. Cut the belt at the end you want permanently attached to the buckle. Depending on the material of the belt, you may need to melt the end where you cut it or put one of the metal covers over its end to be sure it doesn't unravel if its fiber or weaved material. With the metal teeth bracket loose, insert an end about 1" into the buckle bottom being sure to have the proper side of the belt and buckle facing the same direction. Push the metal bar down hard till it's firmly in place. The teeth in the bar will bite into the belt material. You've now got a very tight connection between the two and the bar should be locked down and not easily able to open. If your bar doesn't clamp down tightly, your belt might be too thin for this buckle. These buckles do not work well with thin or slippery surface belts like leather. They are mainly for vinyl web and fiber weave belts. Put on and test the belt size and be sure the excess you made fits under the nearby belt loop. If it is too big or sticks through too far, go back and shorten it a bit more. Obviously its better to cut too little the first time than too much. You can always shrink the belt but not lengthen it.I like these buckles more than the others I've tried. But I did remove one star for the awkwardness at getting them tight on the first try with elastic belts. This is an experiment for me as to whether they will help my comfort level. Time will tell if I use them permanently or go back to the pin and hole buckles and leather belts later.

The tolerances of these buckles are not up to par with the military-manufactured grade. The opening for inserting the web belt is too tight. The pinch roller may be the weakest part and cannot hold up to stress for too long. Buckle may last a year before metal fatigue breaks the pinch roller. Military-manufactured buckles will last a lifetime. Even the vintage Boy Scout buckles were built to last. Another example of poor quality export manufacturing quality (China).

Very thin tin material. Barely grabs my canvas belt; I can only imagine it would slide off a vinyl belt. The metal "nubs" at the top and bottom of the gripper bar are so small I can barely grab them to loosen the buckle. If you were in the military or in the Scouts, you've seen much, much better. The metal tip snags on the buckle in both directions, even after hammering it HARD. It works, but barely. Not worth the effort to return.

I purchased this buckle to try with a leather belt strap, and it didn’t work at all, but that isn’t the reason for the two-star review (I mention it in case anyone else has a similar plan for this buckle).The main issue I have with the buckle is that it arrived with a very poor quality surface finish that rendered the buckle pretty much useless if you care at all about the appearance. The buckle doesn’t appear to be solid brass, so polishing would likely remove the plating pretty quickly.I’m also skeptical about the overall durability of the buckle’s construction even if used with webbing strap as intended. The front panel of the buckle is attached to the back with very thin bent metal tabs. Considering how easily they bent when I tried it with leather, I don’t think they would hold up over time. In fact, they bent so easily that I didn’t realize the buckle had failed. I suspect you would have a similar result if used with thicker cotton webbing as well due to the design of the buckle mechanism.At best, I would consider this a very light duty buckle for a thin webbing belt that won’t be given rugged use.

The color and finish was nice, however the paint was easily chipping. The metal was thinner than other slider buckles I have, which made it feel cheaper. All would be forgiven, it it actually worked like it should. The deal-breaker was that once I threaded my belt through, the buckle's slider/fastener would not go all the way through its groove, only halfway through, and sometimes unevenly. I hope the photos I've attached illustrate that this is how far back I could get the slider back with my bare hands with the belt threaded through. I had to return it.NOTE: As an alternative, I suggest getting the flip-top version, which seems to work fine.

Of all the belt buckles I have ever purchased, this one was the most amazing. Not only did it hold tight to the end of my belt, but it clasped the other end so tightly that not once have my pants fallen down. Yet when I’m attacked by a bout of OMS (Old Mans Syndrome) it releases in plenty of time. I haven’t been this excited since the Holstein calf got her head stuck in the fence.

I ordered the Classic Silver Nickel Polish Military Flip Top buckle. All these reviews are for the slider.The metal measures out to 1.12 mm which is very close to 17 ga. Very sturdy, well engineered, and when closed, you can't tell the difference between it and the slider. Flip tops are infinitely easier to operate and have unparalleled holding power. I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for this type of buckle.

It's very thin, like slim to the point that it doesn't feel substantial. That combined with a pin that doesn't protrude outward enough from the bukcle, makes it incredibly difficult to actually tighten. The "buttons" of the slide pin are teeny and dang near flush with the buckle, so you have nothing to actually grip and slide at a certain point.

Perfect to replace from another type. Nice to include the other end the same colour.
