Mader's Reptile and Amphibian Medicine and Surgery: 0000323482538: Medicine & Health Science Books @ desertcart.com Review: Great Resource for Pet Owners - I am not a veterinarian, and I can't afford to go back to school for that right now, so I thought I would just buy a veterinarian medical textbook to learn the information I wanted. I have a pet bearded dragon and a northern pine snake, and I take their husbandry very seriously. It is hard to find accurate information online, especially for bearded dragons, and I wanted more knowledge on their anatomy specifically. I'm really happy with this textbook so far. It has beautiful photos and illustrations and covers a wide variety of topics including husbandry aspects, welfare, and common illnesses plus treatment methods. I'm attaching photos to this review showing the full contents of this book to help others in their decision to purchase. I do take my pets to a local exotic veterinarian for regular health checkups, I'm just the type of person who likes to know things for themselves too when it comes to caring for my animals and signs of illness to look for since reptiles are known for being very good at hiding illnesses until it's too late. I recommend this textbook for veterinary students AND regular folks who want to learn more about their pets. Review: Great addition to the library - So much more information than the last edition. Organized for veterinarians looking at cases.

Layman's placeholder review + info on digital copy
No one else has left a review, so while my situation is unique and the item is packed for a return, I figured I would share here for other folks because there is some important information you should know. Disclaimer: I am not a vet, a vet tech, nor in training for either profession. I love animals. I have had many pets over the years, and love watching wildlife, too. I have been an avid reader of animal books since I was a child where my family would not buy me toys at the gift shops of the places we would visit on road trips, but would gladly let me get the book on native wildlife. I am very grateful for this. So here I am, an adult who has my first pet reptile and while the internet puts the world at one's finger tips in many ways, there is a lot of controversy surrounding reptile husbandry and so much misinformation, too. I wanted more and felt this book would offer me a truly legitimate source of knowledge. I looked at the preview on an older edition, considered it, but saw this edition - though only a few years newer - had a significantly larger amount of information. It looks like this one has amphibians along with reptiles, for a whopping 1500+ pages of information! So it was ~$115 for the old 488 page reptile-only edition, or ~$170 for the 1500+ page reptiles/amphibian updated edition. Seemed a no-brainer to me since both are pricey textbooks. My copy's problem: I got this from a third party seller as "new" and it took a couple weeks to arrive, much less than the 1-3 months to maybe-possibly ship from Amazon, but sadly the moment I opened the book I realized the binding was creased up nearly the entire middle the binding. WIth such a heavy book this problem would never "get better with age", so to speak, so my copy is currently wrapped up and will be on its way back to the seller tomorrow. What you should know for YOU, and why I chose to leave this review now without having read the book yet: The hard copy of this book comes with an enhanced digital copy. So, DO NOT buy the digital copy of this book. With the older edition of this book, the price of the digital is pretty much the same as the hard copy. Digital is currently not for sale from Amazon with this new edition, but it could very well be the same price when it is finally offered. At any rate - do your research before buying and compare the prices when you can do so! Also, please note that the digital editions are bound to each copy of the book via a scratch off code. Something to be aware of if you are shopping for a used copy, as if you want both digital and hard copy, you may want to spring a few extra bucks for a new book. Again, do your research and weigh the pros and cons of the current pricing and what you want/need. In terms of the content... I will definitely come back and review the book later (maybe sometime later since the wait is terribly long at this point and obviously a working person won't be ploughing through 1500 pages of medical text in weekend!). However, I can share that from a brief browse, if you are another layperson looking for deeper information on your pets, I suspect you may enjoy this resource, too. This text appears to be brim-packed with information, photographs and charts. Details of all sorts that are delivered in a pretty accessible fashion. The closest context I can offer is I recently was diagnosed with cancer and underwent a variety of treatments. I read a lot of medical journals, papers, studies and... boy did that stuff just make me want to gouge out my eyes, flip my desk and run in circles flailing my arms. I suppose part of my problem with it was related to the topics being so close to home, an uncomfortable home, but the other issue was that there was zero attempt to make that stuff palatable. This book seems wordy, but in an acceptable way. If you like reading about animals and have a reasonable vocabulary I suspect this could work for you, too. Added some pics to show the digital copy offer, how to redeem, etc. Also the binding issue so you can see the size of this book! And to know to look out for similar defects. Hope this review helps. I will update it when I can. Thank you and good luck!

Beautiful book with pages stuck together!
This was a very expensive book. It was very disappointing to have pages stuck together. Even though we carefully tried to separate them with a very sharp blade the pages are now ragged.

Embora esteja em uma fase inicial da leitura, penso que o livro tem uma boa densidade de conteúdos, por exemplo, me chamou a atenção algumas questões de ultrassonografia em lagartos.

I am currently studying for a GP cert in exotic animal practice and this book has been a really useful tool in helping with that. I love the quick reference guides to use in practice when I'm unsure of anything. Wonderful book.
