Are the molcajetes smoothed and ready for use?

The molcajete pictured above is made of lava rock which in itself is a coarse Rock . Yes it is ready to use but, no it is not smooth. They're used for grinding whether it happens to be corn kernels or Chili's. We use ours for making guacamole, and salsa. When cleaning it use a small stiff brush to clean out the pores and hot water of course. I hope this helps you.

I am looking for a BLACK one. Is this molcajete black or black and white?

The Molcajete I purchased is of a native lava rock and is basically black, but has flecks of a grayish lava as well. These are made from natural rock and thus there is inconsistenty in color and form. It is not perfection in its own right, but is marvelous to cook with! Love it...

it smells like dirt? Is it supossed to?

It is made from lava rock...after it is used for a while it will likely take on other spice smells.
