Modern Nostalgia
This is how you bring a franchise back to its roots.Sonic Mania has classic gameplay similar to Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic 3, and Sonic 2 for the Genesis. Some memorable zones from those classics are brought back and "remixed" in Mania. The entire game is presented in classic sprite visuals along with modernized music and responsive controls. Levels can move fast, or the player can spend ample time exploring and looking for extra challenges. The game does little to break from classic Sonic, but there a few new ideas such as the scrolling plane section in one zone and jumping between the foreground and background in another. Encore mode, new with the Plus edition, has an interesting character switching and stock mechanic that significantly improves on the classic Sonic and Tails experience.Overall, a solid classic Sonic game. Hopefully Sega produces more games like this, and hopefully they give the developers more business in the future -- they clearly get the Sonic formula.

A Must Have
This is what was missing on the collector edition of the Sonic Mania launch..I am glad this product exists, I was very disappointed when I bought the collector edition with no physical game copy. It was just a useless mega drive with no game, just the code. Now Thanks to the fans to make this possible. We have a great cover amd physical copy that includes the full game plus the Extra content.About the DLC content and the new (encore) mode.. it is a very good new approach for sonic games. You will spend more hours with lots of fun in new ways to play this game using different characters!Still I am disappointed:no Ice Cap zone.. or even new trophies.

Fun, but with downsides.
The gameplay is very well polished, the controls are fun to use, and the pixel art is great to look at. Certain bosses were annoying, and some levels are irritating as well, so be warned. Other than that, it's great.

The best Sonic experience in a LONG time
Sonic Mania Plus is a game that everyone who enjoys side-scrolling platforming needs to play, especially anyone who is or ever was a Sonic the Hedgehog fan. Top-notch vibrant sprite animation, great level design, and one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard, all come together to make this an amazing Sonic game for all fans, both new and old.

Emulates a 16-bit game
Don’t take it as a PS4 type of game. It is an expensive DVD emulating the original 16-bit game. If you are a fan of the original 80’s game, go for it. It was not the case with my purchase, thus the 2-star rating.

Interesting game almost ruined by difficult bosses
This is not a review of the packaging which is great, but rather the game, which I had not played until yesterday. Let me preface the rest of this by saying I am a lifelong Sonic fan and the first system I ever owned was a Genesis. Those original games still hold a special place in my heart and I've beaten them many times. Part of what I always loved about the Sonic games was that they weren't very difficult. As someone who generally sucked at platformers, I couldn't get into Mario and Mega Man the way other kids could. I preferred Sonic because it was fast, colorful, easy, and overall cool. When I heard about this game over a year ago, I couldn't have been more excited. It was supposed to be a return to form for Sonic with a brand new game celebrating the old and new. However, since it was digital only at the time, I held out expecting there to eventually be a physical release. Which there finally is here, however I couldn't be more disappointed in the game. I feel like it completely missed the point of what made the original games great in my opinion. My first problem with the game was discovering that 2/3 of the levels are recycled or remixed from the original games. I figured maybe half at most would be, but this just feels lazy on the part of the developers, like they were too afraid to try something new. But these recycled levels are unfortunately not my main issue as the levels themselves are still as fun to play as the original games, no my problem is the BOSSES.The bosses in this games are SUPER annoying and way too difficult. It doesn't help that the game only gives you a few lives before you're booted all the back to the beginning of the zone, which is two parts like the original games. And these levels are decently long too, which makes this even more frustrating. It's like the developers forgot what kind of game they were making as they tried to put in bosses you might find in other more difficult platformers. The problem here is most platformers move a lot slower and focus on precision. Sonic has never handled that way and this makes your attempts at taking out the bosses feel extra sloppy at times.I really wanted to like this game, but these bosses just ruined the experience for me. By the time I got the spider boss on the fourth level I just gave up. If I want to play a Sonic game that doesn't try to punish the player, I'll just stick to the originals.Update: I thought I’d update this review having now beaten the game. Yes, some bosses were very frustrating and all my other points still stand, but overall the game was okay. I still believe it was way too overhyped as genesis fans just were hungry for a return to classic Sonic. With that said though, I still think as far as nostalgia trips go, Sonic Generations was a far surperior game.

Classic fun
Bought for my husbands birthday. He was always talking about video games he loved as a kid so I was happy when I came across this for our PS4. Best of all we can both play it and challenge each other. It’s like the classic game with a few new options.

More Improved than the Original
I chose the PS4 version, instead of the Switch Version since I already have the Digital Version, I tried two new Charactors, and their pretty good, and the Encore Mode it’s quite enjoyable when having Charactors on your side.So I like the Artbook. (The Reason I got it Physical) So It’s a Great Game.
