Q: Can this sledge be used in similar fashion as a blacksmith's hammer?

I use this hammer with large cold chisels for rock hounding so there should be no problem with using the head on hot, soft metals. Not so sure about a fiberglass handle around a forge though.

The length of the handle is 8 3/4 " from bottom of head to end of handle

Q: Is this a good thumb detector?

Not a problem although, my ST1701 gloves have a deflector shield weave in the matetial.
