The BEST violin studies book I have bought, and I have bought dozens of books.
Pros:Nice sounding etudes and violin studies. Very large collection of music. Broad range of techniques are in this large book.Cons:Challenging studies that aren't for beginners or 1st or 2nd or 3rd year students of the violin, unless you are a prodigy. These are difficult etudes and violin studies. The book is overly thick making the pages difficult to keep open. I literally needed to split the book into 2 smaller books of music so that I could keep the pages open.

Young Violin Players Should Use
As a classroom orchestra teacher, I HIGHLY recommend students in upper middle school & high school to practice out of this book. Especially if considering music as a career.

It is great to have all three books in one compilation
I bought this compilation to replace my aging book 1. It is great to have all three books in one compilation, which makes it a particularly good value. As far as content, this is dry and mostly un-melodic material, similar to Sevcik. It is excellent for drilling finger dexterity and establishing the frame of the left hand, but largely ignores the right hand and arm. The scale studies are quite accessible, and I think make an excellent foundation before an advancing student moves on to more challenging scale studies, such as Galamian or Flesch. Almost invariably, I use early book 1 etudes as part of my daily warm-up routine. Though I think some other method books can accomplish the same in more melodic and balanced ways, this method can provide a benefit to any violinist.

Daily practice
I use this for my students and myself as warming up before daily practice, it is great for intonation and finger dexterity. A word of caution, if you use the bowing and tempo suggested, it is not elementary stuffs. Beginners be aware.

Pinky Exercises
It is what it is. My copy was well printed and stays open on the stand. I don't do this as often as I should, but when I do it really helps with dexterity and intonation.

Must Have
Every single violin teacher I've ever had has told me to use this book. It is indeed excellent for improving technique, and challenging. It is a bit dry, but it is invaluable to any violinist who wants exercises to improve their technique in fingerings and bowing. An invaluable resource that every violinist should have.
