Q: I assume this unit would work well not mounted too?

I did not mount this unit and it works well on the floor. The floor was level, but you might want to secure it for additional security.

Q: How many shelves come with the black unit? I see the cherry one configured for all CDs which is similar to the way we would be using it. Thank you.

it comes with 6 shelves to adjust for cd's and vhs, dvd's

Q: Will this unit hold magazines(quilt magazines)?

Some of the shelves can be removed in order to make space wide enough for magazines. Although, I'm sure there are probably better units suited for magazines than this one.

Q: How many Blu Rays can this fit?

I was able to fit around 120 DVDs. (Using the shelves for nothing but DVDs.) Blu-rays are a little bit thinner, but I would safely say at least 120.
