Perfect to surf fishing with no too much weight to fish all day long

This rod is my first conventional surf rod. I have used bait casting setups in fresh water for decades and have been using spinning equipment in the surf since childhood. But I have not used them for long distance casting in the surf. Foolish on my part! The Penn Prevail 12’ Heavy Surf Casting Rod was a great first casting rod to cut my teeth on. Spent a weekend of surf fishing and this rod did great. I was casting 5 oz. weights with large pieces of cut bait, maybe 7 to 8 oz. total weight and it did great. I can now cast further than I was ever able to with spinning equipment, in fact I’m getting almost the entire 190 yards of 20 lb. test off the reel. I have caught only one fish large enough to feel the rod was challenged, a large sting ray, and it handled that fine. Only time will tell if it can handle the stress of heavier challenges. I will update if my opinion changes. Addition 04/2016: I have become proficient enough casting conventional equipment that I needed to upgrade the reel to an Penn Squall 30 Lever Drag (SQL30LD). This rod takes everything I can give when casting it. I have likely gone beyond the 10oz. max weight when using a 6 oz. sinker with a Bunker fish head bait. I love this rod. I have now reeled in a 31lb Rockfish and a 22lb Cobia with it with no issues. I plan to get another identical setup. Addition 06/2015: I have received the second of these rods and I'm just as happy with the second as I am with the first. I caught a 35 lb. Bull Redfish in Florida, not sure if it was on the first or second rod, but again it did great. This rod has the power to put a lot of pressure on the fish, in fact you could put too much pressure if you're not careful with the reel drag settings. The rod doesn't bend as much as the medium heavy rods I've used in the past. On a soft mouthed fish like Snook or Weakfish and you could pull the hook. Set the drag correctly.

It is very light and with very strong backbone. It is very well made rod. Shipping was extremely quick and first time ever it didn’t get damage. However, it was struggle to cast a small piece cut bait and a 10 oz sinker, so I switched to a penn battalion 12’ heavy.
