Learning to cook asian cuisines and this ingredient was required. Got it. Smells great and so unusual. I asked a chef friend who is teaching me some recipes and they said it was good quality as it wasn't overly diluted with wheat or rice flour. Package was sealed. Not pricey for a rare, organic product that I cannot find at Safeway. And it adds a nice scent and enhances the taste of food, I don't know how to explain it but it is special.

I have not cooked with this yet. However, upon opening, I was greeted with a strong, pleasant, curry aroma. I have never smelled such a lovely aroma from asafoetida nor hing.

There was no expiration date available. It was so old that it had almost no smell at all. Hing should be extremely fragrant. at least there was no gluten, however, considering the above, that is dubious as well.

Probably should have listened to some of other reviews but to reiterate. No ingredients list, so no guarantee on what's in it. No certifying body for the "organic" is specified on the packaging so no guarantee there. Pretty expensive so should at least by really tasty - strike 3. Very mild in comparison to all other pure asafetida I've had, but on par with other asafetida mixed with other inert ingredients. Not much taste or smell. Waste of money. Would not buy again.

I recently bought this asafoetida (hing) powder for my mom, and we couldn’t be happier with the quality. I thought I would give this Organic Asafoetida Powder a try, because it is considered a Healthy Digestive Aid, and because one of the pictures (as well as elsewhere on the internet) describe it as a strong flavor often compared to garlic or onion. Because garlic and onion are not recommended for a low fodmap diet, I was hoping this would be a good substitute. Hubs and I added a sprinkle to our sandwiches, and for both of us this seemed OK until half way through, at which point the asafoetida took over giving a somewhat earthy taste to the remainder of our sandwiches. (Guess we should have started with the 8.8 oz bag).

If you have Gerd, this is awesome. Have a few seasonings I use to replace some of the other that I'm not supposed to have.

Happy to find an ORGANIC hing...AND without added wheat or rice! Very good taste; decent price. I use it every day!
