These whistles work well with little effort. That could be important if you are stranded and have to blow a whistle for a long time while waiting for rescue, or if you are injured and can't exhale strongly over and over. Also, I believe that an emergency or survival whistle should be plastic like these are, not metal, in case you have to use it in extreme cold. The whistles come with a nice lanyard as well as a clip. I think that I would use the lanyard to secure the whistle but use the clip to keep it from swinging around and getting in the way. The bright orange and red colors are appropriate for emergency gear, and the fact that they come in a handy and affordable bundle means that the typical family can pass them out to all members before embarking on an outing. They seem very durable, and there are o moving parts that can freeze, or be lost or damaged in case they get left in a pocket and make a trip through the washing machine.

Great whistles, but my order only had three, so I'm going to return them. They are quite loud and having a lanyard is handy.

After a recent scout trip where we had to use whistles to locate each other on a trail where we got separated I learned the hard way that not having the right whistle for the situation is a problem. After some research it was evident you need to look for whistles that are specifically made for emergency situations which brought me to these whistles. Their design makes them loud and reliable. In a side by side test with our old whistle these were clearly louder and do make a much more distinct sound than what you think of for a whistle. Not sure that distinct sound is better or worse in a situation but it is worth noting. Additionally I like where the lanyard attaches is sturdy and not a cheap plastic ring that extends out that will break off (problem with my old whistle). The whistles come with reflective lanyards which is a bonus so you don't have to find your own.

Bought these because of the low price. The sound is not as crisp as other brands(more expensive) of whistles I own. The adjustable lanyard is a good touch. I was expecting all orange but got a mix of orange and red. Otherwise I would have given a 4 star rating.

Price is right and these plastic whistles do not use a ball inside - so if they get wet - they will still blow loud and strong. Pass them out among your fellow campers to use in emergency.

I got these to clip onto our life jackets for kayaking and fishing. They are loud with a bright sound that ought to be able to get the attention of just about anyone. I have an extra, so plan to clip it onto my day-pack for hiking. Super versatile and doesn't get in the way.

These are very good basic whistles, essential when kayaking or camping, and potentially life-saving at other times also. I like the pea-less design; the whistles work effectively even in below-freezing conditions. The whistles have a lower tone than the Fox 40 that I carry on my keychain, but they are still loud and impossible for me to put so much air through them that I "blow them out," as I can sometimes do with lower-quality whistles. The whistles are designed with a built-in clip that could attach to a pocket or a piece of webbing (e.g., on a PFD for canoeing or kayaking). These are all good things. Although the whistles come with reflective lanyards with spring-loaded toggle cord locks that can be tightened, the lanyards are the reason that I am giving these whistles only a four-star rating. This is because the lanyards have no break-away attachment. This means that if the lanyard was around my neck, it could potentially get caught on something and strangle me. If I fell out of my kayak and got washed into a strainer (a downed tree), this would be a very real life-threatening risk. I do not believe that a safety whistle should come with such a safety hazard. However, apart from the drawback concerning the lanyards, the whistles themselves are well made and loud.
