Great for educating new comers to thyroid disorders
A friend of mine and her mother recommended this book to me. My mother was recently diagnosed with a thyroid disorder and I was looking for something that would help her understand her thyroid issues better. Since then, my mother and I have both read the book, and I am about to order a copy for a friend who was recently diagnosed with a thyroid disorder.I liked that the book was simply written and could be understood by people who don't have a medical degree. My mother would not have read it if she hadn't been able to understand it. It is simple but informative, which is exactly what someone new to thyroid disorders needs. It discusses thyroid disorders, underlying causes, and the connection between thyroid disorders and other diseases. We liked that it also explained the different thyroid tests and results, as well as the different medications and treatments that are available. The book also addressed nutrition. My mother has bookmarked and highlighted portions of the book, and she now takes it to the Endocrinologist when she has appointments. She now understands why her doctor might prescribe a certain treatment or order a certain test. She also knows what questions to ask her doctor. She is no longer afraid. I am not saying that this book will answer every single question, or make you more knowledgeable than your doctor, but it can help you understand a lot of what is going on, and it can make the whole process a little bit easier to deal with.If you have an autoimmune disorder (such as Lupus or Rheumatoid Arthritis) then you might want to pay special attention to this book. My mother was also diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis and they are exploring it's connection to her thyroid problems.

Overcoming Thyroid Disorders Third Edition ... David Brownstein
Hi, This is the best book to explain TSH is not to be gone by. My pituitary is not working to make TSH maybe due to gluten. Gluten may attack all glands besides thyroid/gut lining. Doctors need to tell people gluten may be causing low/high thyroid and low minerals so T4 doesn't convert to T3 very well. I get clots when my thyroid is too low. I was thrilled to see this mentioned at the end of the book.I have mitochondrial issues which make thyroid tests not be helpful. Heavy metals also block my thyroid and raw walnuts etc. Detoxing helps the thyroid work better. I am praying my mitochondria DNA can repair itself. Going by symptoms is needed for thyroid dose. I also have Lyme/coinfections which cause me to need a higher thyroid dose. Antibiotics hurt my mitochondria besides the infections hurting me. Taking iodine may help and putting the thyroid medicine under the tongue may help get a higher dose.I love Dr. Brownstein books...easy to read/simple for all people to read/book binding is easy to read/it is well organized.I am going to read all of Dr. Brownstein books. I learn new things each time.

So-So But Informative
This book contains a lot of information, conveniently located in one book. As such it is very educational. However, it does have problems with the writing. First of all, there is a lot of information that is repeated over and over again. That combined with the fact that the book is type-set with double-spacing, makes me believe that that author and publisher were just looking to fill up pages to make it printable as a "book" instead of a "booklet." The repetition got a little annoying after a while. The writing is also very simplistic - in other words, you can tell the author is not a writer. If you can get around those issues, you will find valauable information contained within. Was it worth the price of the book (I think I paid nearly $40 for it)? Probably, if you are struggling with thyroid issues and need to educate yourself and your care providers.Addendum Regarding Comments About My Review:I am continuously amazed by people who feel it necessary to condemn others for their opinions. My opinion is just as valid as another's and in fact, varying opinions from many contribute to a more well-rounded, overall review of any given product. If you need/want a simply written, repetitive book you will love this writer's style and the information provided. If you are like me and appreciate well-written text, then you may find this book a little tedious. However, as I stated in my original review, there is a lot of good information contained in the book. And as a bonus, it is cheaper now than when I originally purchased it.

Essential Information for Treating Thyroid Disorders
While the title of this book is a little deceptive there is enough information to understand the major treatments for thyroid disorders. You may not overcome the disorder but it can be treated in an effective way. David Brownstein has had great success treating his patients with natural thyroid medications. He does not include any success stories with synthetic medications. A lot of his patients simply did not respond to the less-than-natural treatments. I will say however that you should be cautious about taking iodine. I'm taking 225 mcg of iodine from kelp and have had no problem but some people get acne if they take iodine - maybe in larger doses Otherwise I enjoyed this book and can recommend it to you. I'll be talking to my doctor about prescribing a more natural medication as it might help me lose weight. I think you will enjoy this book and it might help you but by writing this review I take no responsibility for your health. This review is for entertainment purposes only.~The Rebecca Review
