This is by far the best book I’ve read on platform businesses thus far. It gives a really good and comprehensive overview, filled with plenty of examples and practical tips for incorporating platform elements in your own company. The authors managed to condense the latest academic research on platform businesses into an engaging and accessible read. Highly recommended for anyone looking to understand and implement platform strategies in their business.

Dies ist ein wirklich hilfreicher Leitfaden zum entwickeln einer Plattform-Strategie für die eigene Organisation oder das eigene Unternehmen. Gerade die einleitend beschriebenen Beispiele erfolgreicher Plattformen hilft dabei ein eigenes Verständnis für die Thematik zu bekommen. Die danach beschriebene Methodik hilft auch uns in der Handwerks-Organisation aktuell dabei, eine eigene notwendige Plattform-Strategie zu entwickeln. Die Komplexität der Herausforderung bei der Entwicklung einer eigenen Plattform-Strategie, ist für fachfremde Entscheider der betroffenen Organisation lösungsorientiert aufbereitet. Daher ist dieses Buch gerade für die Manager zu empfehlen, die sich effizient in diese Thematik einarbeiten möchten. Wir empfehlen es in unseren Handwerks-Organisationen aktuell auch immer weiter!

Felix Wortmann, Sven Jung and Oliver Gassmann helped by bringing the principles of platform business onto 88 pattern cards: 1 - Ideate cards if you have no platform idea 2 - Designing the business model of platforms if you have a viable platform idea 3 - Scaling and managing one specific platform business model The book brings now the basic terms definition of platform, ecosystem and their business models. It describes each pattern card and gives concrete examples (nice to convince management 😉) and some guiding questions to ask during a workshop … and it helps how to setup a workshop with your team to sharpen the saw and come out with a clear strategy. 🚀

The authors manage to provide a comprehensive overview of the most inportant strategies and best practices for succesful platforms. Most importantly, it comes in a very practical format that allows students or practitioners to directly dive into the world of platforms. From my reading, the insights are not only limited zo digital native platform business but can also help industrial firms and entrepreneurs to get started with a platform business model. As someone who knows the academic literature, works with many succesful platform businesses, and teaches MBA classes, I myself found the platform navigator to be a great source for my teaching, research and consulting work. As only a minor criticism i would have appreciated some more elaboration on how platforms can help not only achieve better business performance but could alps help tackle important sustainability challenges. But maybe that's something for another book.
