Tasty meal variety;healthy; easy;saves $$$!!!
Looked thru every recipe & there are a lot of them. I didn’t need so many basic oatmeal breakfast recipes since they were so similar & basically just variations of flavors. But that’s the only complaint. It’s a very pretty book, clear instructions w/ great pictures of finished recipes, alternatives are listed for easy substitutions, & has great variety. Easy to find ingredients found in normal groc. stores, & all the recipes appear to be very easy to do & very, very easy on the budget! Some good tips were in there & the sausage or pepperoni crumble recipes & taco filler recipe (all 3 meatless) will not only be favorites but will be incorporated into a lot of soups/salads/stuffed peppers/& rice dishes. I’m not a tofu or fake meat fan, so the oat variations for these are GREAT! You could say it’s a no-brainer to just add oats to recipes for fiber & thickening or to stretch the food budget, but this book is more than just that. I looked online @ some of the oat companies for recipes using their oats & I think this book did better than the oat company recipes I found. I plan to use these recipes a lot. Love the nutritional info per serving & that the recipes are for 2-4 serving w/ mostly 2 servings so it’s perfect for cooking for just 1 & easily doubled if needed. Very few soy ingredients & I think there was only 1 of them that didn’t have a soy-less alternative suggested.

Great variety of recipes, but...
This book offers a broad variety of wholesome, sweet and savory recipes, and lots of quality photographs. There's a lot to look forward to trying here. I had imagined, however, that oatmeal itself would be a more prominent ingredient in more of the recipes. For instance, there may be just 1/2 cup of oatmeal somewhere among a whole list of other more prominent ingredients (in other words, the oatmeal only plays a small supporting role, technically making the recipe an "oatmeal recipe"). I had been expecting recipes for savory loaves of oatmeal that could be sliced, or oatmeal "meat"balls, or mostly-oatmeal burgers, with oatmeal the starring ingredient. (I love oatmeal.) I'm not really complaining -- I'm glad I have this book, and am on the lookout for others by Kathy Hester.

Disappointing
I want to start eating more oatmeal for health's sake, but don't like it sweet. I was hoping this book would help me do that, but I was disappointed when it arrived and I found that the sweet recipes outnumber the savory and main dish recipes. I was looking for more breads, patties, casseroles and soups. Some of the recipes use processed soy products ("Biscuit Topped Soy Curl Stew", etc) and soy milk. We don't use soy. I don't need a bunch of oatmeal smoothie recipes or recipes for fake cheese powder and "cream cheese" made out of cashews. I was not impressed with the recipes I've tried (and some were just plain inedible) and would not make them again. Vegans may find this book more useful. My 3-star rating is based solely on the recipe selection and the recipes I've tried, however I want to add for anyone that, like me, has a problem with the "dumbing down" of the English language. Again, this has no bearing on my rating. I found the reading of this book to be quite annoying. Among other things, The word "veggie" was used over and over. I can't stand that word being used by any (even moderately) intelligent person over the age of 2. Vegetables were referred to all throughout the book, and not once did the author take the time to type out the word v-e-g-e-t-a-b-l-e. Even my 3 year old twin boys (try to) say the word properly. That said, I would still use this book and would have rated it higher had I found the recipes better to my liking. That's the risk you run I guess, buying cookbooks online. You can't sufficiently look through them before purchasing. Had I had that opportunity, I would not have bought it.

Simply, beautifully, perfectly, OATrageous.
Hester has once again shown us why she is the queen of vegan cookbooks. Far removed from the old days of settling for vegan cookbooks of questionable quality, testing and workmanship, today we expect great recipes when we receive a new vegan cookbook (every Hester recipe I have tried, I've loved, so I have no hesitation of the culinary perfection in store), but what makes a cookbook great is the thoroughness of the meal plans, the flexibility of the ingredients and of course, the photos! Every photo is perfect and delightful. The font size and style, perfect for reading on the counter. The range of ingredients and options takes the humble (and incredible) oat to new levels of excitement in the kitchen and on the table. Every page is curated with thoughtfulness. Even the binding thrilled me; a stitched binding instead of glued, so it's perfect to rest on the counter or a stand without creasing or damaging the book.I can't wait to try all of the recipes, and I'm sure this book will stand with The Great Vegan Bean Book and Vegan Slow Cooking as one of my most beloved and used cookbooks.

Good Recipes; Not Great Type/Binding.
Great cookbook - only the first section is breakfast oatmeal, granola bars etc. The rest is savory dishes, desserts, even drinks. It's a great way to use high fiber or even gluten free oatmeal in dishes in place of breadcrumbs.Four stars because of the book itself. Some have praised the fonts, I hate them - why medium/dark grey on shiny white pages? That combined with small print and glare from the page makes the recipes very hard to see, if you have glasses or trouble seeing you'll need a magnifying glass to help you. Also the binding is cheap - you can feel the pages separating as you bend them lay the book flat and I can tell already that with use they're going to start falling out; some pages are already loose. Still worth buying for the recipes just be prepared for the book to be less than user friendly.
