Hansel and Gretel - Anthony Browne
Anthony Browne works his imagination in this up to date makeover of Hansel and Gretel. The text has not been dumbed down, nor has Browne retold it differenty. This version is faithful to the Grimms original almost to the word. What is particularly attractive and unique about this version is of course Browne's amazing illustrations. I like how it is set in a modern period. The choice of hues also add to the intended atmosphere, murky browns and greens earlier on, then brighter colours at the end of the story. As with many of Browne's works, there are some details that you need a second look at to find new meaning. I won't give too much away as it really needs to be seen to be appreciated. This is a truly fascinating book to look as well as to appreciate the original story.*****SPOILER ALERT*****There are two pictures in different parts of the story that are similar and on closer inspection of the faces, I believe it was intentional.

lovely imagery, challenging vocab
I use this text to teach Y2 children. The imagery is great, can be slightly scary for little ones. The language is extensive, but a great teaching tool to push their understanding and vocabulary.

Fantastic illustrations to share with children
Fantastic illustrations to share with children. Interesting text for ks1 to get their teeth into and produce their own version of the story. As always this traditional tale allows plenty of oppotunities to use various drama techniques. I had misplaced my version therefore bought a new one - a valuable book for any ks1/2 teacher.

A lot 'darker' than I expected. Bought it for my 4 year old, but won't read it to him till he's a little older!

Another super book by Anthony Browne
Anthony Browne's books are always full of 'magic' and the illustrations are thought provoking and make children look closely. There is always something 'new'. We are using this book to help children become aware of the 'language of story', make them think about how sentence openers can enhance their work and make their own writing exciting, so that others want to read 'more'.

Best £5 you'll spend on a kids book
Always loved it and lost original copy, kids of all ages adore it as its so dark. Things hidden in the pictures and one of his very best books in how he observes life eg the stepmothers make up even when they are so poor !

Love Anthony Brownes illustrations
Love Anthony Brownes illustrations, the family look downtrodden...perfect!Wording is still traditional. The book created a lot of discussion in class and helped children to remember the main points to the story along with some repeated phrases. If I was teaching yr1/2 again would use this book again.
