This is an excellent product for someone just learning chess or who wants an inexpensive portable self-contained set. The board and pieces are made from wood. it provides a good balance of quality and cost. Customer support is superb (more later). I would buy this set and further patronize Chess Armory again. The board is large enough to play on comfortably, but small enough to put in a briefcase or back pack. The board folds in half with the squares out, and the individual pieces are retained inside with elastic bands. It has light metal hinges and clasps to hold it closed. You could add a large rubber band or a Velcro band to additionally secure the closed board if you are so inclined, but, I don't think it is necessary. I liked the quality and design of the board. The pieces are reasonably large (3" king) and have a traditional style which I believe is called Staunton. They are light tan and dark reddish brown. The grain is barely apparent in the pieces. The quality of the pieces is not as high as the board. The first set I ordered had a blemished bishop with a dark gouge. The rest of the pieces were of a suitable quality. The replacement set pieces are a little rougher, but unblemished, and of an acceptable quality. The owner of Chess Armory contacted me to see if I was happy with the original set and to provide a very nice PDF from Wikibooks on how to play chess. Good for beginners and intermediate players. I told the owner about my problem and that I had set up the return to Amazon for a replacement. He offered to refund the replacement cost. Overall this has been an excellent experience for me and I would patronize Chess Armory again.

I’m no chess expert but I have had a few sets and this is a nice one. For the price there are some minor QC issues which I consider acceptable. The finish is a little rough in spots and the pieces are a little dried out. A small amount of oil and some very fine, light sanding will make it shine like a new penny. Aside from that the 16” size is a nice compromise between the 14” and 20” sizes. Very playable but not too big for a coffee table. The pieces seem to be good quality wood. I wouldn’t pick it for traveling. The pieces are stowed in elastic loops which if you’ve ever had an old pair of underwear that’s way passed it’s expiration date them you know they will eventually wear out and even while fresh the pieces will still come loose and rattle around if handle roughly. For the home it’s perfect The build quality is very good. Everything lines up well and closes flushly. The light squares a like an inlaid veneer but it’s very handsome in use. Kudos to the children that built this!

Great set..good price

My brother told me to buy this chess board game so he can play with me and my dad. The package came on time and in great condition, no missing chess pieces and none damaged. The board is very sturdy and stable, it doesn’t break when I drop it. I’m not sure how to measure the size but my best guess is it looks exactly like the picture, the board does. I bought and received this item less than a week ago.

Love it. It's a good size, the pieces and the board are made from a nice wood, and every piece is held in place inside the board when you store it by a little elastic band. Also for a very affordable price given how expensive some chess sets can be.

Bought this set as a birthday present for our oldest but was disappointed with the quality of the pieces. Amazon's chat is rubbish; selected the option to read unread messages from the seller but was redirected to the homepage instead. This coming from a supposed leading online shopping platform is laughable.
