someone said it would work with the new invasive "spotted lantern flies"? Is that possible? Only answer if you know for sure. thanks.

Let me add to my previous post. Timing is everything when using this product. You need to use it now (late april - mid may) when the spotted lantern flies are still in their nymph stage. The nymphs will try to climb up the tree during the day and will become trapped in the sticky paste. This technique will NOT work once the spotted lantern flies become adults and begin flying. Please refer to the Penn State guide provided in the one of the other comments. I actually spoke to one of their staff who pointed me in this direction.

Do I need to reapply this after rain?

No. It is unbelievably sticky, but does not wash off after rain. I did one, single, simple application on several trees, and it immediately wiped out my ant problem. I noticed that ants collected on it for weeks afterward, but they still could not get by it. In my area the Summer has just ended and I have taken off the tape that holds the Tanglefoot from each tree. (That was easy to do.) The bug issue is dead for the remainder of the year. I will re-apply in the Spring. ...That's one, single application on about 5 or 6 tree trunks, using about 2% of a small, 15 oz. container, and the problem was wiped out completely for this year!!!! I guess that I did not need to buy 2 containers. LOL ...But I did not understand its potency. I am going to hit more tree trunks in the Spring with this stuff, since my fairly big yard has been decimated by bugs for the past decade. If I did not use this product, the trees which I lovingly transplanted would now be dead already. The ant infestation was to the point where no leaves could grow; thus no pull of water up the trunk; thus impending dry stick and tree death. The infested trees were headed that way, and I had to learn how to fix them from YouTube videos, many of which recommended this product. This is one of the simplest and most effective products for the money that I every purchased.

Will this work on Japanese Beetles?

Tree Tanglefoot Insect Barrier is a non-drying, sticky compound that forms a barrier against climbing insects. It controls the following insects: ants, black vine weevil, the cankerworm, gypsy moths, winter moths, and other crawling insects. The label does not specifically state that it will control Japanese Beetles.

Tree diameter is an important consideration, but what you are painting it on makes a huge difference as well. I tried the tree wrap but couldn't get it to stay, so I painted directly on the trees. For smoother trunks you need less, but a rough bark tree (I have some rough bark maples) you need a lot more because you have to get it into the crevices to form an effective barrier. I did four younger trees (~8-10" diameter) and three older trees (~18-20" diameter and much rougher) and used one and a half 15 oz tubs.
