Addition to Home-school Science Curriculum
6yo 1st grader - Using 1st grade to explore all areas of science. Note that we don't really care about "core" standards. Not sure if this meets those or not.Book provides the framework for a good, basic foundation of Science including experiments. Book assessments and lessons range from circling items, writing the answer, T/F, cut/paste, crossword puzzles, etc. Nice mix of ways to apply and test their new knowledge. You will have to copy some pages to do the exercises - ex: Pg 137 and 138 are both cut and paste exercises, but if you do pg 137, you've cut up part of pg 138 (on back of pg 137) and can't do it. There aren't many of these though - just have to watch for the few occurrences. Each section starts with "background information" - a LOT of text that helps the educator gain the knowledge needed to teach the lesson before the kiddo does their experiments, workbook lessons and assessments. Ex: Unit 2: Earth and Space Science background info runs from pg 62 - 68 and has 11 related reading books listed. I don't use all of the related reading, just those that I think will help teach the info covered in the background info, then we use that book for a reading lesson. Not all books listed are a 1st grade (or even 2nd grade) reading level though. Takes some time to research and decide what / how to incorporate into the lesson plan.Suggest reviewing the items needed for each experiment with plenty of time to pick up things that you don't have lying around the house. Ex: I had to order magnets (wanted bar magnets with the N and S already labeled), had to find a cork that would work for the experiment (had to get from someone else as I had none), dig out a sewing needle, etc for the compass experiment.Pages of the WB do tear out.Overall - a well-rounded, informative addition to our lessons. Will check out other Steck-Vaughn resources based on this book.

Great Science Curriculum!
This book is our 1st grade homeschool curriculum. I love it. The units correlate perfectly with our state standards - Physical Science, Earth and Space Science, and Life Science. Inside the Life Science is health related information such as tooth care, hygiene, eating properly, etc.At the beginning of each unit is a guide for parents/teachers with background information for teaching the unit. There are also assessments and extra ideas for activities. This book is meant to be photocopied and the pages are a newsprint type of weight. But you can certainly use it as a write-in workbook if you want. Just photocopy the few pages that have cutting of pasting and use the copied page to paste in the original :)Originally, we bought Daily Science, Grade 1 and it was so boring! My daughter hated working in that book. We are so happy to have found this one instead.I highly recommend Take It to Your Seat Science Centers, Grades 1-2 to complement this book. It has great full color activities. Though it is geared to teachers, you can easily adapt it to homeschooling.

I am possitve this is a good teaching tool
The description of this science book says it is a student edition. Looking at the picture it says it is an all-in-one resource for busy teachers. I was wanting a stand alone student workbook. The latter is what I received. Each of the three units begins with 6-7 pages of background information for the teacher to use in presenting the topics. It is not written in terms that first graders would understand, it must be reworded for them. Next is a 2 page unit assessment, followed by 45-47 pages of work, experiment and activity sheets. There is very little background information on these sheets, that information must be given to the students verbally by the teacher. I am possitve this is a good teaching tool, just not in the form I am wanting for ease in homeschooling. The same company makes, “Core Skills: Science” series. These seem to have the background information written in the book for the student. I will try it.

Good Science book
My son is loving this science book so far lots of great easily understood information and activities. I only wish there was a list of everything needed for hands on acotivites at the beginning of the unit as we have had to rearrange lessons somedays when we didn't have the needed supplies for the hands on work.

WOW Lots of Neat projects!
I like the smooth nature of the book and that it alternates between content question pages and experiments and relating question pages. I do wish it was colored pages & had a master supply list for all of the materials needed for the projects and relating page numbers though.Still I am very pleased and would/will by the higher grades of this book.

Although its black in white, the lab activities are interesting and help my child understand the topics more. So far its one of the workbooks that my son has mostly enjoy.
