A good read
Essential reading for anyone interested in the offbeat Bruce Chatwin, his family, his adventures in Patagonia and his research into his distant relative, Charles Amherst Milward.

The definitive biography, excellently penned.
Excellent writing and such an interesting story to tell. As someone else has written, this is a work better than anything the subject of the book ever produced.

The man with a child in his eyes
A fascinating read which goes into great depth about the writer Bruce Chitwan who travelled far and wide to be a story teller of great talent. I started reading his biography as I wanted to find out about Argentina and Patagonia as someone who loves to explore new places. I ended up finding not only the essence of the writer and art expert but also the man himself and what drove his love of adventure, his non conformity, his vulnerability and passion for life. He was indeed an individualist.

One of the truly great biographies
Echoing what almost all of the reviews have said, this is a truly remarkable book. For those people saying to themselves "I don't normally read biographies", please buy this book! Chatwin, whatever his faults ( and there were many ), was a fascinating character, and by the time you have finished the book, you feel as if you know more about Chatwin than Chatwin did himself. It's the perfect book to have by the bed for dipping into, as every page has something interesting to say. Few books are better than this.

Must be one of the best biograhies I have ever read
I actually read this book three times because it contained so much well researched material. I knew nothing about this character, other than reading "On Black Hill" and had no idea that he was such a complex and fascinating person. Nicholas Shakespeare does not fall into the trap of many biographers by using boring material to 'pad out' chapters. Although Chatwin had some unpleasant character traits, he also had many loyal friends, who were with him to the end. Not just a recommended read, I would consider this a "must" read
