Adequate and well made textile boots.
I have always considered myself a slightly wide fitting, and so so was slightly concerned at the reviews stating these boots too small. Exercising my usual walking boot strategy of buying one full size larger however resulted in a pretty snug fit with thicker hiking socks. These are slightly narrow and at first feel as if tight on the sides of your feet, although this does seem designed to prevent excessive forward foot slide in the boot (to which they work well). There is plenty of room for toes.As goes a textile waterproof lined boot (not completely leather), they are competent if unremarkable. Any boot will let water in in the most extreme repetitive wet conditions (ie constant wet grass or puddle/stream wading), although a well made full leather boot with a waterproof liner will hold the water out for much, much longer. These mainly textile boots are no exception. Hiking all day in uncharacteristic torrential rain in Southern Spain, and it wasn't that long before I felt that unpleasant bloom of cold damp hit my feet.I know this of textile boots with waterproof liners, however, so did expect it and don't mark the boot down for it.This is a adequately comfortable boot, but where it does excel is as goes weight and general/wet grip. Extremely light (great as flight luggage weight limits and for endurance dry weather walking), and a fantastic wet rock grip that I didn't quite expect given that the sole is not that soft rubber. Whilst I never trust a sole on a wet surface even when I know the boot well, these did stick when needed most.As with all Merrell boots, it is as well made as any textile walking shoe you will be likely to find.A note as goes waterproof liners in boots.Having owned a great many different boots/liners, I can say with confidence that most decent makes of boot boasting an included waterproof liner will work as well, given that care has been taken constructing it. With that in mind I dont insist on branded Goretex liners at all, and have never regretted it. Goretex is a good liner, but so is Dri tec used by Hi Tec boots. The only boot I would not now buy is anything by Karrimor as they have let me down too often both as goes poor fit and poor watertightness.I have over the years bought most brands of boots, and have to say that the expensive names (Berghaus/Brasher, Zamberlan, Scrapa etc) are far from necessarily the best.I actually now always look for a good and well reviewed boot by Hi Tec first. They are an American company who have made walking kit for a great many years and know what they are about whilst pitching for lower profit sales.Fab boots generally that have all the attributes needed by a serious hiker. Most boots by them include the waterproof/breathable liner as standard, and I find full leather boots by them more waterproof than many. One Hi Tec pair I have owned for a couple of years has still never leaked (although more by luck than anything else I believe)..I am digressing, but hope that my experience is of use to someone. These are pretty decent textile boots, which I admit I would never have bought at full price of £100. I actually got them for £60, and feel that I got adequate value.

Only suitable for dry weather
Average quality bootsAfter 2 years of light use they have started to fall apart. Waterproofing is non existent.COMFORTThis purchase followed a happy year or so with Merrel walking shoes, which I loved. If anything the boots were more comfortable than the shoes. Following an operation on my toe last year these have been a godsend. I have wide feet and after buying a size up (same size as my shoes) I am very very happy with the comfortWATERPROOFINGDropped a star because if this. I do get wet feet after a long walk in damp conditions. I have been used to full leather walking boots so my expectations were high.BUILD QUALITYI haven't given these boots a particularly hard time, but both shoes have both split on the same area. The right shoe now has a large hole, the left a small split that I'm sure will grow. Due to the material they can be hard to clean.

Always a good make of shoe
You can't really go wrong with Merrell. Their shoes are long-lasting and made to the highest standard. These hiking boots were comfortable from first trying them on and they don't rub after walking a few miles. Other boots I've tried get really sore but I've had no problems with Merrell's so far.

Lace loops have broken
An OK boot that has quality and sizing issuesHad them since May 2019 and have only worn them a few times. Then this week a Lace loop has become unglued.I bought these as it looked like the lace loops are doubled. However they are not they just looped over themselves and glued. Not what i expect from Merrell if i'm honest. Plus i find the sizing very tight.I'm usually a 10 but even a 10.5 is border line comfortableAvoid

Good Boots
I was looking for a replacement for a worn pair of Berghaus Explorer Trek boots and these have proved ideal. I've had 2 pairs of Berghaus and the last pair have not lasted. The tongue split within a few months and the soles have worn very quickly. So I was looking for a good alternative. The Merrell boots were a little narrow on first trying them on (as mentioned in other reviews) but that was probably just as much to do with the old boots in comparison. They are light, easy to wear and the soles look very substantial and offer good grip.
