Do you have to use all containers for lid to work?

No - you dont have to use all containers to work. You have the top lid, then a tray that snaps onto the bottom container. I tried to snap on the top lid without the tray to the bottom container and it would not work, but if you use the top lid with the tray on the bottom container it works.
