I bought these on January 18, 2018 (at a lower price than currently) and had three of the four stored away in locations in case of a power outage. One I keep in the kitchen either on side of the fridge by using the magnetic base or sitting on top of the fridge. This way I can grab the lantern in case of a power outage while being downstairs or if I came home and find the power is out. Last year my wife came home and the power was out. She called me and I reminded her of the lantern sitting on top of the fridge. The lantern saved the night for my wife and our daughter until the power came back on.UPDATE: Today February 27, 2020. I learned today that the top of the lantern screws off and inside is a small ferro rod. I've included two pics because I see people have been asking what the small item is. When I bought these lanterns I don't remember seeing pics in the description showing the top small storage area or a small ferro rod. The description shows the small storage area but no mention of the included ferro rod. I didn't see a scraper to scrape against the ferro rod to produce sparks but I have several other ferro rods and extra scrapers. Plus I have a few knives (folding and fixed) that came with 90 degree spines that work great for scraping a ferro rod.Needless to say I bought the lanterns for emergency lighting purposes but knowing that there is a small included ferro rod is a added bonus for people that are buying these for camping. Hopefully the ferro rods are still in the top storage compartment like they were when I bought these lanterns back in 2018. I won't ever use the included ferro rods and if these lanterns ever break then I'll take out the ferro rods and store them with my other bigger ferro rods.

I was looking for a lightweight, smaller, portable, very bright lighting unit and this little guy delivers on all fronts! Folds up to fit inside nightstand drawers in both bedrooms and another one beside me “at the ready” in my chair side table in the LR. I’m very pleased with the quality, ease of use and battery replacement and it’s wonderful to have three levels of brightness to choose from. These units will light up the entire home when needed. Winner, winner - chicken dinner! You will love it!

This review is for the CL30 4-pack.These lanterns have an excellent overall quality. As soon as I received them I tested all four, and the light output is incredible-- more than sufficient to light a 12 foot by 16 foot room with a single lantern from my testing. That said, the dimmer switch is helpful because the light output is beyond what is necessary for walking with it in hand.The construction of the lanterns feels sturdy and durable. The handles click in to place when not in use with and hold the lantern securely closed so that no battery power is wasted. The lid to the fire starter compartment also fastens securely closed with a click, and the battery compartment lid can be rotated until its very snug and water-tight.The included fire starter with each lantern has a clever, compact design wherein the scraper can be screwed in to the rod's container to give more leverage when striking the ferrocerium rod. After reading up online and practicing with the fire starter I have found the most reliable method for creating sparks to be:-Scrape off the black coating on the rod to expose the silvery metal underneath-Hold the blade of the steel scraper perpendicular (90-degrees) to the rod's surface-Point the rod in the direction you want the sparks to fire-Quickly drag the scraper along the length of the rodBe aware that the black coating is to prevent oxidation/corrosion of the ferrocerium so be sure to store it in a dry area if you scrape it off, or hold off on scraping it until you need to start a fire.The only possible improvement could be slightly stronger magnets at the base, but I have still found the magnets to be just strong enough to hold the lantern sideways or upside down on most metal surfaces (even slightly curved ones like a stainless steel trash can) as long as the lantern isn't touched or blown on by the wind.Overall an excellent product and an exceptionally good deal for their current price ($28.99 for 4).

I own both this set as well as the previous version that lacks the magnetic base and dimmable light. Both are spectacular for light on a walk, within a tent, at home instead of candles (when electricity fails) or as an alternative to a flashlight. Depending on the your purpose for light, both are great options. For this light, the magnetic base functions exactly as described, and the dimmable light feature is a bonus that I highly appreciate when in a tent or sitting at an outside table.The light is sufficient to work in close range, but can be a little blinding if you are prone to staring into lights. This is the nature of this type of lantern; as light is cast in a 360 degree circle. That circle makes it a little difficult to use the lantern as a spot light, but that is beyond its intended purpose. These are lightweight, the construction is solid, no loose parts, and it feels and appears to be quality made. I keep these on a shelf for emergency purposes, but they help when walking at night to the shed, or going to the car, or whenever I prefer to cast a greater array of light around a patio table. The dimmer button is a great improvement.One caution about the magnetic base is that it picks up iron bits in the soil. It is simple to clean off, but just be cautious if you are going to place it on your nice dining table after having placed it on the ground. I highly recommend Etekcity products, as I have yet to have one fail on me.

Bought these for a camping trip and they worked great! I I brought all 4 but only ended up using 3 of them. The battery life in these are great, we used them every night for 3 nights 4-5 hours each night and the lasted the whole trip. I would have liked them to be a little brighter but for the size they provide a good amount of light l, 2 lit up the picnic area of our campsite adequately.

I purchased the Etekcity lantern for camping a few years ago and really liked it so this time I ordered 4 more with the magnetic base. I find these lanterns well made and easy to use. It is a excellent lantern and it is perfect for power outages, camping etc. and with a magnetic base it will be handy in the workshop too. I would highly recommend this product. I gave one to my neighbour who is a senior and he liked it, because it gives off more light than a conventional flashlight.

Great little lights, very powerful

This white light is too harsh and blinding. If you hold it out in front of you walking on the path or place it on your kitchen prep area, you’ll be blinded for a few seconds every time you look anywhere near it. If you tip it sideways to light something, the bright light is also in your face. Perhaps they could be used at 1/4-1/2 brightness spread around the campsite, but there are much nicer strings and lanterns with softer lighting for this purpose.
