No Real Detail
I was interested to learn more about CBT, but I found that this course skimmed through detail. It focuses more on sessions with patients, rather than communicating and training the listener. Also the speaker says in almost every chapter, Let's watch this video' so I guess this is more a video course rehashed into an audio book. The notes say that the reference material can be found under 'My Library' but I could not find anything there, and the speaker just tells you to google most things.I also found the repetitive use of the word 'oftentimes' distracting - the speaker says this word a lot, almost every time he speaks. In summary, this audio book was quite interesting, but it just wasn't focused on teaching you anything directly, you're just sort of a passive bystander...really just an observer to an audio book. So I could not honestly say that I actually learned any techniques adequately - by the title, I expected to be actively engaged and directly taught techniques.

Another great course from Great Courses
I had little knowledge or understanding of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy before listening to this. Like other Great Courses publications this is an excellent course that teaches the basics of the subject well and it suitable for a beginner. It is fascinating to have a very basic understanding of how the brain reacts to different stimuli and how this can be applied to real life situations to help people address issues with, for example, stopping smoking or losing weight or dealing with a traumatic experience. The course takes a fairly academic approach at first but it is the real life examples and interactions that make this such a good listen. This could be used by someone who wants to explore how they can use psychotherapy to control their own thoughts and impulses and is also an interesting and entertaining course for someone with a passing interest in the subject.
