WestmarkTrio Rotary Grater, A, White

I am very well pleased with this product. I had a slightly different style of hand grater and decided to try this one. The other style design by a different manufacturer had where the cutters were locked in by a twist on fastener. That is what failed. This model the cutters 'drop' in and they have the crank build on. there is nothing to tighten. The cutters are sharp and they run smoothly in the housing. While it takes a little more room to store, I feel the exchange for the durability and ease of operation is a great exchange for that. I use mine mainly for grating cheeses over the top of salads and dishes that have already been served on plates. It is also handy for grating cheese over the tops of dishes to be baked.It says it will work for vegetables as well but you would have to cut them into smaller pieces in order to get them to fit inside the barrel for grating.For those types of things I feel the traditional box grater to work far better.It is definitely worth it to purchase it for grating cheese alone. The picture is a little deceiving. it looks like there are four cutting attatchments in all but there are just the three. Fine and course grate and a slicing blade which would be great for things like radishes which are hard to slice, or for shaving cheese.

As a veteran of rotary grinders, I was sorry to see one that I had for years suddenly disappear, for reasons unrelated to this review. I own an even older one, Swiss-made, all-metal, at least 25 years old and still going strong and not rusty despite frequent dishwasher visits, as well as a newer Model made by Zyllis, also Swiss. Both do the job fine, but I needed the third for a different venue.The picture of this German grinder looks enticing, what with the interchangeable drums, which is an excellent idea. The text says "grinder with 3 interchangeable drums" but the picture shows a fourth drum. I expected 4, and got 3. Probably enough, but nevertheless, I would have preferred the picture to be consistent with what was received.More importantly, the plastic body of this grinder is flimsy at best, reminds one of the old "bakelite." The mechanism to pop open the grinder to put in the replacement is bound to break by the first non-mechanically user. The package says "2 years guarantee" but seriously, who is going to bother with this low-cost product?In summary -- if things tend to break on you, don't buy this grinder. If instead you feel mechanically gifted and coordinated, you may give it a try. The concept is great. Longevity is uncertain.

I've only used this grater a few times, but the main reason I purchased it was to grate hard cheeses like Parmesan. It does a nice job with it. I have to say that you have to be careful using the unit, as it seems like it could be easily broken if too much force is applied. So far, no issues, but I watch the device and cheese carefully as I grate with it.

A bit more flimsy than I expected. But it will shred cheese. If that's all you want to shred, it will do okay.

The blade options were good and while it held together it was satisfactory, but neither the material nor the design is up to par as far as durability goes. It is relatively thin plastic with a thin tab that keeps the hopper closed, that tab broke in the normal course of trying to open it up for cleaning. I'm very careful with utensils and still broke it. Would not repurchase, probably used less than two dozen times. Will look for something metal next time.Note - Product has a five year warranty but only applies if you register the product within 30 days. I feel they should accept my Amazon receipt as adequate proof. In addition, as written it looks like, they could claim it broke because I misused it and deny the claim. I'm not going to pursue this further. Not worth my time. I will definitely not buy it again.

I can understand why some people felt this would break easily, but it's not a chain saw. It's just a grater and doesn't need much pressure or force. If you find it is hard to use, try using the larger grater tube. I use it for grating VERY hard Cheddar/Parmesan cheeses. I put a cube of cheese about 1.5 x 1.5" and don't squeeze too hard and it really works well. I like the larger grate and it's a really smooth grating process. It comes apart (there is a little tab inside which releases the grater tube) for easy cleaning and I have found no areas where cheese gets stuck and cannot be removed. I also like to soak it in hot water before washing. Can also be put in the dishwasher, but we don't run that every day so I need to hand wash mine. I have also found we actually use/waste less cheese because the mess is so much less.

UPDATE: The piece that holds the drum in place broke off within two months.. Luckily I was able to return this to Amazon. Glad of that because I really ended up disliking this.I use this type of grater/shredder nearly exclusively for cheese. I used to have a Microplane grater and it lasted years. I bought this one to replace it because it was much cheaper. So how do they compare? The hopper is quite a bit smaller than the Microplane which surprised me. I have to cut my cheese into smaller pieces which takes a bit longer to shred. But the mechanism which holds the drum in place is easier to open and close which is nice. The best thing is that you can see through the drum. With my other grater I would have to stop and turn it over to see why the cheese wasn't coming out, with the Westmark you can watch the cheese as it is shredding. Really a nice feature. Easier to clear any clumps too.The top of the hopper is ridged so I have found that I need to use a brush to get it clean but it does help push the food down. It cleans easily in the top rack of the dishwasher (after I make sure all the cheese is out of the ridges). I always put the drums in the dishwasher and they come out great.Haven't tried the slicer yet but the other two drums are nice. The coarse shredder makes nice big shreds. Just wish it was a big wider overall. Recommend.
