24 Nights: Rock

What a Classic Rock Performance
Eric Clapton the greatest guitarist ever in my book - Clapton is mesmerizing. I love these versions of "Running on Faith", "Wonderful Tonight", and "Layla". Remaster job is excellent for the audio but the bonus of seeing him performs these hits over and over is priceless.

24 Nights of brilliance!
I bought the original 24 Nights collection when it first came out thirty years ago. To my ears, it was a very good collection and represented a nice cross section of the rock, blues and classical selections that he performed at his concerts at The Royal Albert Hall. With this new release, it almost feels like the original album under represented the magnificence of those shows. Kind of like comparing a Picasso to a velvet Elvis (well, sort of….).I purchased the Rock based set with much anticipation (the two other pieces, Blues, and Orchestral , are both on my wish list). For starters, the sound quality is miles better than the original release. The clarity and separation of instruments is far superior to the original. There are a number of songs from his then current album, Journeyman, mixed in with his classic war horses. His playing is hypnotic on all of them, especially on a reimagined version of “I Shot The Sheriff”, which leads into a majestic “White Room” seamlessly. The band is tight and mesh in with EC’s style of playing. They sound energetic and just really bring these songs to life. The guitar solos don’t meander and keep the listener engaged.I’ve purchased his other live albums—Just One Night, Unplugged, One More Car, Live w/Steve Winwood at MSG and more—and must say that this offering is the, uh, Cream of the Crop.My only regret is that I didn’t buy the entire box set. But that might change!Do yourself a favor and get this one now! Just make sure you leave me a copy of the big box set.

Another look at Clapton's 24 Nights -- some thirty years down the line.
I've had the original two-disc set in my collection for decades, but I couldn't resist picking up this recently released strictly rock edition -- even if it is some thirty plus years down the line. But for the fact that he was out on the road humping his (then) latest album release, the middling Journeyman, this would've been a five-star rating. But about a half-dozen Journeyman songs in an 18-song setlist, well, that's at least four too many. It is a cracking concert performance, however, filled with big-time titles and well-known musicians. Longtime Clapper fans (me included) will likely eat it up, and casual fans will find much to enjoy as well. He touches all the bases -- Cream, Blind Faith, Derek & the Dominos, his solo career -- throughout the evening, and he plays them all with the honesty, heart, and soul we've come to expect from him. The DVD is a nice bonus, although it's not quite up to the standards of many of the concert videos he has released over the years. Still, it makes for a very enjoyable ride for the hardcore fan. Four stars and highly recommended to the Clapton faithful.

Mostly 4x3 and 5.1 Surround is OK
Sometimes they display two 4x3 images side by side to qualify for the 16x9 advertised, but the concert is mostly 4x3. Sound quality is good with guitar and vocals coming from the rears. Recording volume could have been higher.

Clapton in top form
I saw Eric Clapton live in London in 2018. He was not in good shape. In this recording he was clearly in top form. I enjoyed the longer concert versions of the many hits he played.

One of my favorite live albums
It's a great live pressing. Will need a couple of cleanings before play, because QC is not good.
