The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi

I’m a huge fan of the “Art of Star Wars” books for the new films, especially the sequel trilogy, in that they provide a (gorgeous) glimpse into what could have been, concept and story-wise. Just wish they’d followed through on a lot of these concepts instead of taking the films in the (all-too-familiar, and then totally bizarre and uncharacteristic) direction they wound up taking them in. Some really fun, beautiful, fascinating concepts and images in these books, as well as some insight into the creation/inspiration behind them. Well worth the price tag, and a worthy addition to the library of anyone out there who appreciates the visuals of sci-fi cinema, if not cinema in general.

Whether or not you like this book depends on whether you like Phil Szostak’s “The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Personally, I loved it, and was happy to find that this book delivered more of the same. It offers some real insight into the pre-production process and the the ways in which the storyline was developed. The art is absolutely beautiful. This is a book that fans of Episode VIII will want to have on their shelves, and one that they will go back to again and again after repeated viewings of the movie. Hopefully Mr Szostak gets to round out the trilogy with an ‘Art of Episode IX’ book in 2019.

The third and Final item that I ordered was The Art of Star Wars : The Last Jedi in hardcover. This book is literally filled with over 240 pages of incredible illustrations, photos and Beautiful Artwork from the latest hit movie of the series. The ships, creatures, outfits planetary outposts and beautiful worlds are wonderfully featured in this amazing collection even the weapons that were designed to be used in this film. This book is a must have for every avid collector, it's simply fantastic! And this item also was delivered to me in perfect condition. I'm really going to enjoy this book and the others as well.

This amazing collection, of artwork is beautiful. This book is a real treat. It shows how well planned 'The Last Jedi' really was, and this art book offers so much compelling context, to the film's incredible design, characters, and story. I am very grateful, for all the talented artists at Lucasfilm, and to Writer/Director Rian Johnson. Excellent book of beautiful art !

As with all these books, you're left thinking, 'Why didn't they put that in the movie?' Some of the compositions are really inspiring. It's interesting, though, that the best images in the film don't seem to come from the concept art, which suggests the director has a better imagination than many. It's not quite as bursting with images as I'd have liked - a few pages longer would have made this just right, but the content is great if you're a fan.

It's the same great quality you can always expect from these books! I'm not going into any details but I will say this: the first book I ordered was lost in transit and Amazon sent me another one free of charge. Once I got it, I enjoyed it as much as any other THE ART OF STAR WARS book.

I was only- so-so on the movie, but this book is spectacular. I love the snippets of text where we get to read what the movie-makers were inspired by and what they were shooting for. As I read this, and looked at the pictures, I think the movie makers were shooting for the moon and, for me (and a lot of other fans) missed spectacularly, But in my mind, I can read this--and even the novelization of the movie--and picture a good movie that could have been.

This book isn't merely a collection of concept art, it's a tour through the collaborative creative process at Lucasfilm, highlighting the contributions to the Sequel Trilogy made by individual artists, directors, writers on the Lucasfilm Story Group and even the now-retired Lucas himself. We learn that the basic story of The Last Jedi -- a headstrong young woman apprenticed to a wizened, cynical Luke Skywalker - was conceived by George Lucas prior to The Force Awakens. How the story evolved into its final form is fascinating and inspiring. I wish this book was twice as long. As it is, it's not only a good coffee table book, it's a valuable insight into the passion that continues to drive the Star Wars universe.
