Not quite a root riot dupe but a good alternative
I bought these thinking they'd be like the root riots, but the actual texture is much denser and the size is much smaller than an actual root riot even after soaking. I was worried about the plugs being too dense for the more delicate seeds to get going. That being said, I've had success rooting my strawberry runners and starting seeds in them, with some being very small like viola and petunia. Because these plugs are denser/less flaky, they are less messy to use also. I'm happy I tried them out and will get more when I'm out!

Best grow pods I've found for hydroponic gardens
I've tried a total of 5 products and these are far and away the very best. I have a Lettucegrow hydroponic garden and these work best for my home-started seedlings. I find that many more of my seeds germinate and thrive with this product. They aren't a perfect fit--my system has round plastic planters, but I just pop these in, once my seedlings have a couple of leaves, and the plants thrive. There's a bit of space left open around the pod, but that doesn't seem to matter. These are easy to handle. They don't break apart, but stay firm and easy to move from my seedling trays to the grow stand. They seem more resistant to mold as well. They're worth every penny.

These things are definitely sponges
The media could not be loaded. Was hoping for an inexpensive starting medium to use with hydroponic systems, unfortunately these things make it hard to grow anything in them. They are so dense that it seems the seedlings have a hard time sending roots through them. Out of the couple of sprouts that I could actually get to grow, most pushed themselves out of the holes and died. The 1 that made it wasn’t shooting up like the new sprouts usually do. After a week it was still only just above the top of the sponge. Usually after a week (in other growing mediums I’ve used) the sprout is hitting the top of the nursery lid. The only reason for it to have its growth so stunted is because it is expending all of its energy trying to push its roots through this sponge. They mention that these have a hole already and if they do I couldn’t find it. So I used a toothpick once it was full of water to try and dig a hole. Even that was difficult to do and was met with a lot of resistance. It was like trying to cut foam and just as springy.I finally gave up and went to squeeze the water out of these things to toss them and was able to do so as if they were sponges to clean your dishes. They did not fall apart at all meaning they are so dense they aren’t useful for seeds. The video I included shows how dense they are and you can see my hand shaking to squeeze them very hard and they don’t break apart in the slightest. VERY dense stuff.Maybe if you cut them like rock wool and used them for bare root plants they might work better, but for seedlings I would look elsewhere.
