The Savage Art of Bob Larkin@@ Volume One
L**E
Much variety but not so much savage
In this collection there is artwork of ancient Rome to the modern day westerns, Conan the Barbarian to Moses on the mountain, saber-tooth tigers to dragons, Marvel'sDeadly Hands of Kung fu to all the other superheroes, Doc Savage to James Bond, The Hulk to beautiful women, and a time before recorded history to a future yet to berecorded. This collection has as much savagery as it has variety, but not all of it is savage. Do not be fooled by the cover by expecting a book full of sword-toting babes in allsorts of undress, you will not find them here. Each piece of art comes with it's title and what the pieces were created for, like books or magazines.I recommend this book on it's merits of being one on much variety and deserves to be in your collection.

I can't wait for Volume 2
My usual complain, unfortunately, applies to this compilation of beautiful pieces. It really pains me to see, with the size of a ¼ page, works like the cover for Marvel Super Special 16, Monsters Unleashed 5, Dazzler 1, Savage Sword of Conan 103, 27, 82 and 198.SPECIFICS:Page Count: 64Number of images: 106Small images: 37Half page images: 27Full page images: 422-page spreads: 0BW images: 4TEXT:1 page introduction1 page afterwordA short paragraph with information for each pieceART:32 images: 5 stars53 images: 4 stars21 images: 3 stars0 images: 2 stars0 images: 1 starOverall: 4 Stars

Great Art!
Bob Larkin is one of the finest action/swords-and-sorcery artists working in the paperback and magazine field today. This book is a fine tribute to this terrific artist and showcases many of his best works.

Great collection of Larkin's cover artwork. Hope for a vol 2
I've seen many of Larkin's artwork over the years, but for me, his main claim to fame is his covers for Doc Savage. He is second only to James Bama as being the top Doc cover artist. And it was mainly for this artwork that I got this book. And I was a little disappointed by this section. Out of 40+ covers he did, the only covers reprinted where a few of the narrow covers from the double Doc books, and a couple of Omnibuses. His best Doc covers, in my opinion, where his first, full size covers, with his first (Magic Island) being probably his best, with others like Red Spider, Awful Egg, Purple Dragon, and Flying Goblin a close second. It was great to see the unused covers for All-White Elf and Running Skeleton (probably to be the next double Doc, and instead they went to the Omnibus format). Also the poster for Graphitti, the commission piece, and the stand alone Doc were great. But only about 10 covers of over 40 is disappointing.I DO hope this means we will see a volume 2 (and maybe a 3) with more of his Doc covers. It was also nice to see the covers from the old Warren Rook magazine.

ONE OF THE BEST COVER ARTISTS
Throughout the 70's and 80's, if you saw Bob Larkin's name on the cover to a magazine or comic, you simply had to have it. No matter what the inside contents may be, even if it was a magazine you didn't follow, the Larkin cover alone was usually enough to make you snap it up.In this new collection from SQP, the legendary cover artist get his just due with full-color sampling of some his best and most memorable illustrations. Larkin was doing photo-realistic quality work long before we ever heard of the term and before the advent of Photoshop and Corel Draw. And as evidenced within these pages, Larkin was adept at any genre...Sci-fi, horror, fantasy, super-hero, you name it and he could do it. Larkin's work was always notable for it's crystalline clarity. His work virtually shimmers on the page...or canvass, again all without the tools of a Photoshop to create lighting effects. It's an incredible gift to be sure...Few artists could ever capture the power and majesty of the legendary pulp hero Doc Savage the way Larkin did in his numerous covers for the paperback series.
