It's a great lens, especially for being a prime lens
This was a replacement for an identical lens which I have been using for many years. I had gradually worn the coating off the old lens and was loosing contrast. It's a great lens, especially for being a prime lens, and great for use on the dance floor and in tight situations.

One of my favourite Nikon lenses
I can't give a full review of the sort that you'll find on an enthusiast's or professional photographer's website, but if you search the web you'll find a number of thorough reviews of this lens if that's what you're after. If not, here's my few pence worth. I've been an enthusiastic photographer for a long time, and a Nikon owner for about the last 20 years. This lens is a super-wide angle prime lens that's a bit extreme for most. It's a lens primarily for 35mm film or digital FX (full-frame) format. You can mount this on a Nikon DX body but you'll get an angle of view equivalent to 30mm, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of this super-wide angle lens. Also, this older design does not have a focus motor so it'll only autofocus on one of the Nikon bodies that has a focussing motor in the body. Having said that, because of the lack of a focus motor it is light and compact. It is very sharp especially stopped down a couple of stops from fully open. And it's bright enough for most of my needs. This super-wide can also be used for capturing some unusual perspectives that you couldn't get with a longer lens. Coupled to my D600 body, the auto-focussing is quick and accurate. Overall, I love this lens and this will be part of my FX arsenal for a long while.

A very good lens, sharp, fast and super light.
A very good lens, sharp, fast and super light. Because it's so compact you can easily carry it anywhere.Since some of the reviews on this product were posted Photoshop added profiles for lens distortion correction (Lightroom 3.3 | Photoshop CS 6.3).The only thing that you need to be aware of is that the vignetting and the light falloff are quite visible. It can be corrected in Photoshop, but it's an extra step you need to dedicate time to.If you add a filter that is not super-thin you will make the vignetting worse. However you can get use a step-up ring to 77mm then use any (even 2) filters without further vignetting.

Bees Knees prime extra wide
Fabulous wide angle for Nikon FX. I used to have the manual version for analogue photography and so when I could afford a digital full frame NikonI decide to buy this. Well built, gorgeous and sharp enough for me (ex pro photographer).

love it
I spent a lot of time thinking ether to get this lens for landscape or 24mm 1.4 or 14-24mm and I'm so glad I choose this one because:* it's good quality (really sharp at f5.6);* cheapest from all of them;* still has those wide angle lens characteristics;* it's really small and light;* you can get soft background/bokeh and a lot a scenery in the background if wide open and close to subject;* fast focus;* good colours;I've saved money and weight/space in my bag and will never look back.P.S. I didn't buy it from amazon, but I don't think it matters, it's still what it is.

OK general purpose wide
Could really do with a few more stops as its not great as the light dips, but general great clarity and image quality. Much better than lugging round a big old wide zoom.A year later and its still going strong and the lens I'm most like to chuck into the bag next the 50mm 1.4. On a full frame camera like the D700/D800/D3 etc its very very wide
