Bought for one year old. Mmmmmmmmmmm !
We took my grandson to Seaworld in Blackpool. Well, we wanted to see it and he came along free. Dad did not come in with us as the Admission charges were very high.Part of the display was a huge tank of sharks which little one sat in his trolley watched intently with no fear apparent. He was only 7/8 months old so we didn't really think he was taking it in though we talked to him about everything he was looking at.A few weeks ago there was a film or documentary on television and our one year old suddenly got very animated pointing at the sharks and dolphins and showing a lot of enthusiasm. He had obviously remembered the visit to Blackpool.I bought Jacques Costeau's Odyssey for Christmas for him but found there was hardly any fish in that. Great for saving the planet and showing sunken ships and oil drums but not for a one year old.I already had a copy of this and checked there were fish in bright colours. On Disc 2 there was lots of bright coloured fish for him to watch. So I have bought him his own copy.Other reviewers have said how wonderful the camera work was and how stunning everything is.When the set arrived I tried all four discs in my Sony portable dvd player but it kept putting up "Cannot play this disc" I wondered if BlueRay discs had been put in the set by mistake but on my laptop all four discs worked beautifully. There is soundtrack of course but we may turn the volume off for him, he may enjoy it better without. There is though, English subtitles for the hard of hearing in case anybody is looking for a gift for a Deaf or slightly deaf friend.I am really looking forward to watching the little chap's face when he sees all the sharks and dolphins and all the brightly coloured fish.Edit Dec 31st.After Christmas Day we put the film in the dvd player and sat back. All of a sudden we heard laughing and baby was sat in his rocking chair and kicking his legs which he does when he is excited or very happy, so he had remembered shark tank from 4 months previously again.

A great educational series that is truly entertaining.
Fantastic, a real bargain. This set of four DVDs contains the whole Blue Planet original series, a documentary about how the series was made, plus some separate interviews with various people involved in making it. There are also some separate programmes that are not part of the original series and don't feature David Attenborough. The Blue Planet series is superb, with great camera work, superb narration and the music is also well above the standard usually found in such documentaries. Some of the creatures featured in the deep sea episode had ever been seen before the camera crew filmed them for this series, so it really was ground-breaking work. Even some of the creatures that had been seen were never shot better than in this series. The images are beautiful and inspiring, the explanations clear, informative and interesting. One of the best wildlife documentary series ever, as you might expect with any David Attenborough effort. The documentary about making the series is also interesting, and I liked some of the interviews with the people involved. David Attenborough would tell you it is team work that makes these programs and being one of the best writers and presenters he works with the best cameramen, researchers and producers. It's great to see them credited and interviewed too, and to see a little of their personalities which are normally hidden from us when we watch their work. The other programs are inevitably less well made but still interesting, though I found the American presenter on one of them a poor choice. Many American wildlife documentaries are excellent and there are American presenters who are superb, but I didn't think this guy was one of them. I couldn't fault him for enthusiasm but he was noisy and didn't explain himself nearly as well as others I have seen. When selecting a documentary to go on a disk with Britain's best wildlife documentary presenter it would have been nice to see a better example of what America can do, and I know they can do better than this.Still the set as a whole is superb and I wholeheartedly recommend it. I will watch this set many times over the coming years.

Simply stunning
I bought a DVD called "Deep Blue", going cheap in the local video shop. It turned out to be a excerpt from this series, so I had to have the whole thing. My one gripe about "Deep Blue" was that it lacked explanation for what you were seeing. This has the explanation (by David Attenborough, no less) and more. It is a stunning exploration of most of our planet, the oceans, from the seaside we know to the depths where fewer men have been than have walked on the Moon. Attenborough and the BBC Natural History Unit rewrote the book on nature documentaries with "Life on Earth"; this is a worthy successor and shows that the BBC has lost none of its touch. You spend much of your time thinking. "WOW!" in both of the senses of "What a great shot!" and "How in the name of heaven did they take THAT?"It also brings to our attention that, although we barely know this awesome world (over half the planet's surface is covered in ocean more than a mile deep), we are doing, as is our custom, a pretty good job of destroying it. As I said about "Deep Blue", if this doesn't convert you to an environmentalist, desiring to preserve forever the beauty and fecundity of this marvellous watery world, you are dead.

Review of DVD
First a word of warning this is not a US Regional DVD you will need a multi-region or region free DVD player to play it. With that out of the way this is a breathtaking documentary thoroughly enjoyable to watch and Visually stunning. Sir David Attenborough narration is impeccable there are bonus programs along with the main documentary I highly recommended

eccellente
