The timer can be adjusted between 30 seconds and 30 minutes with a factory setting of 15 minutes.

does the unit come on automatically when detecting steam?

Comes on for no reason then won't go off for hours if at all. Have to switch off power to stop it. Dealer was useless and Expelair exchanged but replacement was just as bad. Dumped it and bought a different make as so many reviews saying same issue with this extractor

If operated by the bathroom light switch and I'm only in for 5mins, does the humidistat come on automatically if light then turned off?

The extractor turns on after approx 7 seconds when the bathroom light is turned on. When the light is turned of, the extractor will remain on for a period of time (2 mins -30 mins) depending on where you set the dial inside I have mine personally set for about 5 mins , any longer was annoying when going to bed, because it is not "silent", despite the title, that is a fact...

If my electrical wiring is on the left-hand of my extractor hole, can the unit be fitted upside down to accommodate? Or will writing be upside down?

Yes I've had to install mine upside down aswell and yes the writing is upside down but I've removed the writing so it would be blank
