Sucks more than a conservative government
This is by far the best carpet cleaner I have found for stains. I have elderly cats (in their 20s) and they have a lot of accidents. This thing is quick to set up, easy to use and really easy to clean. It is lightweight and fits about anywhere I need it to go. It lifts poo and puke out of a carpet and leaves no marks. It also takes my wife's coffee stains out of the carpet and the marks I leave when treading oil and mud through the house after fixing my bikes. I use the vax pet owner solution in it and it is fantastic. I have had it for 5 years now and it is still as good as new. The pipe hasn't split (you have to make sure you pack it away properly) and the suction hasn't faltered. The spray is still good and the nozzle hasn't clogged. The plastic parts are still perfect with no signs of cracking. I still hire a big rug doctor machine from Asda now and again, but I hit all the stubborn stains with this machine first then use the big machine to do the whole floor. IF you have a cat, doc, elderly relative or a teenager, this is the machine to buy!

First of all, I was quite surprised that this came with 2 small bottles of spot cleaner and a small bottle of carpet cleaner. The carpet cleaner doesn't specify whether it's pet safe however. One of the bottles of spot cleaner had leaked a little all over the box- but honestly it was a tiny amount and I wasn't expecting the bottles at all so I wasn't too bothered, although it did mean I had to recycle the box instead of my usual method of storing it for a while in case of returns! I found it very easy to use- I have pretty bad carpal tunnel in both wrists so I was a bit worried, but it didn't create a huge issue. I did have to switch hands frequently when one wrist started to get fatigued, but didn't have any lasting issues after cleaning 2 medium rugs, one large rug and a sofa. If you've particularly weak arm muscles you may want to try the upright machine instead or get a friend to do it for you! My rugs were all bought new in December 2020, so they've only had 9 months of use, mainly in lockdown, so only I've been walking over them in socked feet. Any rare guests have been made to take shoes off. The picture shows the waste water from the single large area rug, which has never so much as seen an outdoor shoe and is vacuumed daily, and it's still surprisingly dirty! The small rugs took perhaps 10-20 mins and the large maybe 30-45. They took around 30 minutes to be dry enough to walk across without getting soaked feet, and about 3 hours to dry completely with the windows open. The sofa took about half an hour and took maybe six hours to dry completely. The suction is very powerful, but my sofa surface is pitted which made it hard for the unit to get a seal to suction the water out completely. My only slight quibble is with the spray which shoots slightly wide of the carpet so you have to aim it to avoid getting a puddle of cleaner on the floor! It also drips infrequently. And as another review mentioned, you have to have everything ready to go to fill the unit from a protruding tap and add the solution to it because it doesn't have a flat top so you have to hold it in position. I saw a question about how to remove the vacuum front for cleaning, and it does tend to get dirt and hairs lodged in it I noticed- it's a clear plastic front so you can see all the water being sucked out (and when there's no more liquid to suction) but it does look dirty after a while. I found just running a little tap water in to it and then swishing it around and pouring it back out cleaned this part very well. Oh and one last small gripe- the instructions say the waste tank is designed for you to fit your hand inside to give it a good clean. I have fairly small hands and it was still a slightly painful scrape getting it in, so I don't recommend this unless you have child sized hands to be honest! Cable and hose wrap neatly and the unit stores very compactly for small spaces. Overall very happy with this little thing and my lovely clean carpets!

Some flaws but good overall
Overall this is a decent product and it did a good job of cleaning, but it does have some niggling design issues that hold it back. The build quality is acceptable for a domestic cleaner. The extendable ‘luggage-style’ handle feels flimsy and I’m not sure the motorised brush will last forever. However, as weaknesses go, I’m not too concerned since even if both failed over time I will still have a usable extractor. The hose is just about long enough, but only just. It’s a reasonable compromise between utility and compactness. In use I did manage to pull the Rug Doctor over a few times which rolled it onto its back. This is a consequence of the hose being attached at the bottom and the machine having a relatively small footprint without casters. It’s not as mobile as a vacuum cleaner which takes some getting used to. The Rug Doctor comes with 236ml of cleaning solution which is good for 2 tanks worth of clean water. I’m glad they include this, as it servers as a ‘tester pot’ and let’s you try out the machine right away. The solution itself seems to do a good job and there is surprisingly little scent. Of course, Rug Doctor recommend you ‘only’ use their solution, but you can get 2 litres for around £10 which by my maths is good for 16 tanks. The design of the clean water tank is awkward. There are no two ways about it. I had to balance it on a dish rack to get it anywhere near level while I poured in the cleaning solution. You’re better off measuring the solution out separately (approx 125ml), adding that to an empty tank, and then just filling from the tap. If you don’t throw away the included bottle you could use that as a measuring aid (fill it half way). It doesn’t give a good first impression, but it’s not too bad. As a general purpose cleaner to have on standby the Rug Doctor solution seems fine, but to get the most out of the extractor you’re better off choosing the most appropriate cleaner for the task and applying it directly (NOT in the clean water tank). So for example I used a mixture of Daz and hot water scrubbed into a mattress I was cleaning, and then used the Rug Doctor to extract. It worked great and no harm to the machine. The motorised brush is described as ‘strong’. I’m not sure I agree with this as in reality it’s more of a tickle. But it’s better than nothing and the vibration through the hand unit is not uncomfortable, even during extended use. This is great and is probably overlooked as some powered tools become unbearable over time. I’m not an unclean person and regularly vacuum, but an extractor will put you to shame if you haven’t used one before and the Rug Doctor does a good job of this. Watching the waste water being extracted is as horrifying as it is satisfying. But if you like cleaning I dare say you might even enjoy it, and emptying the waste water tank gives you a good feeling of a job well done. I’ve noticed 1 tank of clean water generates about 1/2 a tank of waste water on dry material i.e not dealing with a spillage. Rug Doctor seem to agree, because their max fill line on waste tank is about half way. Again with a compact unit there are compromises to be made but I didn’t feel like I was forever emptying and refilling the tanks. Overall I like this product. Niggles aside it does its main job well. I would definitely recommend it for cars, seating, stairs, small areas of carpet etc. If you have designs on doing whole rooms with this though, I’d probably hold off or at least try to hire/borrow one first. Is it possible? Yes. But you’ll quickly realise it’s not the right tool for that particular job. Recommended. Update: I spent a little more time with the Rug Doctor and gave my car a proper valet. Even though it got the job done, it does have some issues. The first is the hand unit, which is reasonably wide and has trouble with more awkward areas around seat bolsters etc. Also, the length of the hose. It just about reaches the headrest in my hatchback. If you have a larger car you’re going to get frustrated. It still did a good job on the seats but if you’re buying this with mainly the car in mind you might wish to reconsider.

Si bien no trabaja diario lleva 30 meses trabajando!!

I was very sceptical about this product if it will clean my white couch I have from all the dirt my kids and their friends brought on. (I know, I know, what the hell was I thinking having a white couch with kids)... I cleaned the couch 2 times (1 week apart). Both times first with chemicals filled and with clean water right after (as someone suggested in the previous reviews). I let the couch dry for a week. The clean water circle gets the deep dirt out and the chemicals left. You HAVE to let it dry for at least a week, before use, otherwise the dirt from your cloths and jeans stains will make it worse. Wow ... I am impressed! It took 90% of all stains out. I might do another full cleaning circle next week and scotch guard it after. Now I got so carried away with cleaning I used the rug doctor on all of my rugs, upholstery couches... it works really great.

This arrived today. I bought it for several reasons, the Rug Doctor name and it’s not a Bissell! Every Bissell machine I buy, leaks, breaks or any number of things that render it useless. Tired of it. Wanted a name I could trust. It’s early to say how well this thing will hold up or if it will suffer a similar fate but so far, it’s great! It has wheels!! Makes moving this thing around and from room to room a breeze! The auction is amazing! It sucks, hard! Keep it away from unmentionables. The motorized head is also a great feature. I have cats and anyone with pets knows (especially cats), they pick the coziest, nicest place to throw up. There could be a house full of solid surfaces but somehow they find the one square foot of rug to spew their fluids. Also have a cat that likes to mark occasionally. So far, this thing has vanquished all traces. As seen by my UV light. What’s the point of cleaning if it doesn’t DEEP CLEAN? This achieves that. Great for all those spots on rugs, carpet and upholstery. Now there are a few cons. One, the brush head is huge! Almost a pain to hold and I have big hands. You tend to hold it close to the switch for the brush head, which sometimes turns it on when you don’t want it on. It’s got volume! By that, it’s loud. Don’t plan on cleaning anything night if you have neighbors. Much louder than a Bissell. Lastly, the brush head, there’s no way to remove the clear plastic to clean/unclog the inside. As anyone whose used these things knows, hair, dirt, debris gets stuck in there and needs to be removed/cleaned. There’s no way to do that except to stick something thin and long in the opening. Some have complained that the water tank can’t be set down due to design. Not a problem as most tanks for these machines are all curved. Nothing new there. Not a big issue for me. As of now, it’s got 5 stars from me. Again, I just got it today so time will tell.

I've had this spot cleaner for 11 months now. Up until a couple months ago I was thrilled -- suction was impressive, it cleaned really well. Yes, I read the reviews about the tank being inconvenient to fill because it won't stand on it's own when it's off the machine -- not that big a deal really, it's small enough to hold onto and fill and anyway it was a small price to pay for the performance of the machine. I also put up with one of the screws that hold the vibrating brush head in place breaking out because the place the screw attaches is a very weak plastic loop that cracks fairly soon after the suction head has much use (with the pressure and vibration it is exposed to). BUT... a couple months ago, the built-in sprayer started to fail. Pull the little lever to spray and nothing. No, it wasn't clogged, I got online and checked all the things for that -- it is the spray pump itself. I've cajoled it into kicking in and spraying a couple more times, but now it seems dead for good. I'm pretty good with machines and do my research, and short of tearing the whole machine apart, I've done all I can. Seems ridiculous to lose a major function of a fairly pricey machine in less than a year, despite careful use and meticulous cleaning, care, and maintenance. The return period was only a month, So if you take a chance on this machine, be prepared for it to live a short life, despite its price tag. I'm currently trying to contact the manufacturer, since it is supposed to have a 2-yr warranty. This will be the test of whether they stand behind their product or not (I'll update about that). Unfortunately I live in a small town and any service center will be nowhere nearby, but it would be better than nothing. In any case, what started out to be the anticipation of a good review has turned to disappointment. UPDATE (10/2018): The manufacturer 'sort of' stood behind the warranty on the above-reviewed machine (I'll call it Spot Cleaner #1) - they replaced it *after* I shipped the machine back to them at my own expense. The cost of shipping this fairly heavy machine was not much cheaper that buying a new one! Given this was equipment failure, not anything I had done, I don't find that acceptable. Nevertheless, that began this new chapter - Spot Cleaner #2: Right out of the box the sprayer had a problem. Yes, it sprayed, but afterward it continued to 'dribble,' leaking cleaning liquid when I didn't want it - when I was trying to use the suction. But at least it sprayed, and I wasn't about to go through the warranty process again, so I learned to keep one finger over the sprayer opening. It also seemed to leak from the joint where the main hose attached to the body of the cleaner, but I got used to putting a wad of paper towels under that spot after I'd cleaned out the machine following use. A few months ago, however, the sprayer stopped working, just like Spot Cleaner #1. I went through all the troubleshooting once again, no blockage - it had simply stopped taking in liquid from the cleaner reservoir. This time, with nothing to lose, I even tried to take the cleaner apart (the gray bottom and the red upper are separate parts), to see if there was a crimp or blockage in the 1/4" sprayer tubing somewhere inside. But - the way the cleaner is constructed, you can take out every single screw and still the unit won't open. Suspected culprits are 2 small recesses that probably contain hidden screws, but the possible screws are covered with a layer of something I can't get through or pull off. Also, the hose and spray tubing are both attached to connecting components with tiny zip-ties rather than removable hose clamps. This is a show-stopper with the main hose, as the zip tie is underneath a plastic cage-like bracket that then connects to the main body of the cleaner. No way to get to the zip tie, no way to get the other end out of the machine without being able to get the bottom off. This matters because the spray tubing runs *inside* the main hose (also would have been nice to find/fix the leakage problem at that location). I have spent enough time and frustration fighting with Spot Cleaner #2, and I can't pay a small fortune again to ship it back to Rug Doctor - it is going in the trash. I'm ordering a new spot cleaner that is NOT the Rug Doctor, and I would urge others to do the same. I wanted to like the Rug Doctor, really, but there are obviously some major problems with its construction, and the way the company handles the warranty makes it not worth the hassle. Learn from my pain...

I have owned my Rug Doctor spot cleaner now for a few years. I love it for cleaning car upholstery and carpet. It works amazing on home carpet and seating with upholstery. I typically use Resolve spray cleaner with a nylon bristle brush agitation before using my Rug Doctor with the same name brand cleaner. The beauty of doing this process is that you can remove literally any stain and the results are amazing. The best aspect of the Rug Doctor finalizing the process is that it leaves the material virtually dry and smelling brand new. I have removed food and drink stains from cars and dog puke from carpet and this machine is my best tool for the job. Super compact, well made, easy to use and better yet easy to clean. I especially love the handle for carrying and longer retracing handle for wheeling around. Could not imagine a better design. Best cleaning investment I have ever made hands down.
