Does this train actually operate on its own or just light up and needs to be pulled along by hand?

It goes itself (when switched on). It's not very fast but it's very strong. My three year old grandson hooks up over a dozen carriages, and it pulls them up over bridges. He loves it.

How does the spinning wagon spin without a battery?

Presumably the power is transmitted to both wagons from the engine when they're connected.

Hi will this run on the ikea track? I have invested in whole lot of ikea track and would be a shame. Anyone tried this with ikea?

It mostly likely will. We use ours on a different make track and it works fine. Apparently they are mostly standard size. We have bits and bobs from all different makes and sets with no problems :)

It works well on wooden track. We have a Brio track but most wooden track is the same s presume it will work well. My son loves it
