Is 40mm the width of the pipe? (not the pipe plus screw fitting)

Mr P, 40mm (1.5") is the diameter of the pipe that this fits, such as is used for baths etc. There is a smaller size which is 32mm (1.25") typically for the pipes used for hand basins. Regards, lim

It'll work fine on a wasing machine as it's wider bore than the outlet hose. Even though guaranteed for 3 years, we've had one for 10+ without problems.
