Q: Can this be used to mash grains and boil wort?

Yes, it is great to boil wort. I use a 30cm false bottom in mine for mashing that works fine ( pop a stainless steel pan scourer underneath the false bottom in the middle where the outlet hole is if you want clearer wort runoff ). The built in thermostat is not very sensitive for mashing, so I find it better to stick a thermometer into the mash and adjust the temperature manually. It holds the mash temperature pretty well even without insulation and you only need an occasional quick few seconds of heat every now and then to keep it maintained.

If set to top setting it continues to boil. However on lower settings the thermostat cuts off and on.As the burco is controlled with a thermostat control and not a simmerstat it continues to boil when set at high.Robert

Q: the picture appears to be of the pro 27 litre boiler not the 30 litre boiler, please can you confirm which model it is?

Sadly. the Burco boiler range are all significantly deceptive in their stated capacity imho. For example, the so-called 30-litre model actually only holds 25 litres when filled up to the MAX fill line. So, the 30-litre Burco boiler is really only a 25-litre boiler. It will only hold the stated 30 litres if you fill it absolutely to the very brim. But then you wouldn't be able to boil it because it would certainly boil over. And a boiled-over wort makes a very (very) sticky mess! I have two Burcos. They are actually superb for all-grain brewing. Just remember to make the necessary allowances for the true water volume in your calculations and all will be fine :-)
