The surface absorbent layer stops the mess spreading, though it may not stop a whole beaker of coffee etc. from reaching the floor. They are quite long, so when sitting, the pocket lies flat on my mum's lap, so I'm not sure of its value, but if the pocket is left open, it helps protect the lap (though we also lay a towel over thighs). I thought the popper at the back of the neck seemed stronger than the surrounding material making the material vulnerable to tearing, so we have been fairly careful how we undo the popper and there are no problems so far (about 1 month since purchase with 2-3x daily use between 2 bibs). The neck has an adjustable fit (2 diameters). Good width coverage without getting in the way of her arms. Washes well, dries quickly.
