"is this normal?" I Can't speak for iPad. However, a stereo headphone splitter cable is for output only and will have only 3 contacts on the jack plug. Sound left, Sound right & Ground. It would seem to me that the remote Mic is not in use at all as it has no signal path back to the iPad. If a headset combo works on the iPad?
