Works well
Reviews on another site said this would work with leather so I bought it. However it's not the greatest for this purpose or it could be me. I also engraved a piece of wood and a glass jar and it was great

Usefull and inexpensive, but poorly made and VERY NOISY !!
A very useful item and if you shop around you can pick these up for a few pounds. But do use them carefully. The end of the unit where the engraving nib secures is aluminium (or something like that). I found that the first time I tried to tighten the screw to hold the nib, it simply stripped the threads. l meaning I could not secure the nib and the unit was useless. So do be careful with that. I got mine replaced. In use you can engrave even hard steels, quite easily. Personally though, I find the shape a bit odd. However I hold it, it just feels awkward. So writing and engraving names are very difficult to do. Its damn noisy too ! I mean "really" noisy. So do think about where you are going to use it. I do use mine, and find it very useful, for engraving numbers on tools. But I dont think its the kind of tool I could use all day long, say for engraving a design on something.

Great engraving tool
The Dremel 290 Engraver delivers on its promises with exceptional performance. I've employed it on metal tools and found it to be remarkably efficient, yielding excellent results in a short span of time. Despite some users noting its slightly larger size, I personally found it comfortable to handle, posing no significant inconvenience. The only drawback worth mentioning is its relatively loud operation.

Dremal
Perfect dremal for beginners, I use it to clean up old fossils and works perfectly fine.

Does the job at low cost.
Dremel is a reputable brand, and this feels well-made, so I expect it to last.It comes with a plastic stencil containing the letters of the alphabet plus numerals 0-9.The stroke depth is variable. It does what it's supposed to do, engraving metal or plastic.Recommended.

hard to draw with vibration loud
good tool for dremel ok bought most tools plus accessories but supposed to be engraver tested it on think ply soft ply and mertreral works great on soft stuff perfect but soft wood not so good yes puts marks on wood but to me the tip needs redesigning to mark wood better plus at high speed just a racket only reason for 3 stars I could do better with my metal letter stamps not bad price great design just vibrates but tip idea not so good

Good value but very loud!
I bought this as a recommended tool for preparing fossils we found on a holiday. Instead of spending hundreds and hundreds on air powered tools, this seemed like a reasonable alternative.I don’t plan to use this for anything else, so I can’t comment on the ability to use it as an engraving tool. With that said, it does a good job at chipping away at some hard Yorkshire stone so I can only imagine it engraves well. The hardened bits you get are also good value for money. The only real downside I can comment on is the loudness of the machine. For such a small tool it is very loud, to the point I’d recommend using ear protection for prolonged use. I used it to try and prep a fossil and my ears were ringing after using it, but I guess it’s to be expected from something that is powerful enough to chip rock or engrave metal.
