I have been taking these now for 3 months, and I will go off for a month. I definitely feel better and see more of an improvement than when I have been on metformin. Be very careful with this - it can deplete Choline and B vitamins as follows: Increased Need for Choline in Bile Formation - Berberine increases bile acid turnover by inhibiting bile acid reabsorption (via FXR suppression and BSH inhibition). This increases demand for phosphatidylcholine (PC) in bile, since PC is a major component of bile and essential for forming bile micelles that protect bile ducts from detergent-like damage.. The liver uses choline to synthesize PC via: • CDP-choline pathway (Kennedy pathway) • PEMT pathway (methylation of phosphatidylethanolamine → PC) Net effect: Berberine increases the liver’s need to replenish bile phospholipids → higher choline utilization.

Berberine is an alkyloid extract derived from a number of different plants. In this supplement, it's extracted from Indian Burberry (although I'm not aware that the source makes a meaningful difference in the effectiveness of the berberine). It's been used for many years in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine for various purposes, and had been studied by Western medicine as well. It's been shown by to be very effective in lowering blood sugar and cholesterol, and those are the uses for which I take it. I've found this supplement as effective as other berberine supplements fir these purposes. Each capsule is 500 mg, which is not uncommon, although slightly lower than some others. The price is in line with other, similar supplements. I find it a worthwhile, quality supplement.
