Will this open a large can 117oz can?

The answer is kind of. I own and exclusively use can openers similar to this one, the European style I call them, like my current ones are all Kuhn-Rikon, so not this specific model, and yeah, they actually all have issues with the very big cans, as in the 117 oz cans, which I do purchase fairly regularly. I will tell you how I encounter and deal with the problems. Based on my years of experience, and I'm no young pup, it seems the big cans have a different lip arrangement, an arrangement that is larger, as you might say would be obvious since they are much larger cans. So these "no sharp edges" "lid lifter" openers seem to be highly tuned to the size of the lip on the can and what I have found is using them on big cans may work, but the mechanism of the can opener may be forever changed, as in the big can seems to me to "pry open" the mechanism a bit, and thereafter it may no longer work so well on regular cans. It may however continue to work great on the big cans! So what I do as a solution to this problem is I have one "damaged" can opener/lid lifter that I originally thought I "ruined" opening those big 117 oz cans, and now I exclusively use it on big cans and I keep this opener labeled, and that seems to work for me. So I always keep two of these openers. The great thing about this design is they seem to last for years and years if properly cared for, and part of the care I use is to never use my main can opener on those huge 117 oz cans, or rather I exclusively use an already "damaged" opener on those cans. Other people on here say it works fine, but this is my 2c! I kind of agree, in the "shallow" sense that it will definitely work *once*, but mostly I do not agree! B/c I think after that one time you will find you have new problems with normal cans. A more general note on this product, I strongly vouch for this type of can opener as after using these I "cannot go back" to the old-fashioned ones. I grew up using the old-fashioned ones. Today, I find the old-fashioned hard wheel blade cutting ones totally unworkable and impossible to use compared to these. If you are one of those people who has always struggled with can openers, I have to tell you this is a product for you as it has a much simpler, more reliable, and cleaner way of operating than the old fashioned can opener!

Will it work on those pop-top cans that eat my spatulas?

It is my understanding that these will work on "pop-top" cans, but "eating my spatula"? what kind of can eats spatulas? How does it gain access to your spatulas? Do they move around the kitchen until they find one, or are you just resting your cans near your spatulas resulting in a crime of opportunity from your strangely animated pop top cans? I have so many questions!

The video shows left-handed use. Can a lefty really use it? It's not an optical illusion?

I'm right-handed; I normally hold the long handle in my left and twist the operating lever at the top with my right. I was able to operate mine the opposite way as an experiment (hold long handle in my right hand, twist with my left). You have to twist the operating lever at the top clockwise no matter which hand is being used to twist it. My wife is left-handed, so I had her demonstrate to me how she uses it. She uses it the same way that I do (long handle in left hand, twists with right). Not sure if this helps you but there it is.

UPDATE: Turns out there was a small page with instructions that I missed. It's SO easy to use now that I know how LOL [FYI - turning the knob in reverse will get the opener to release] Still a pain to drain tuna, but that's not the can openers fault. LOVE this opener and how easy it is on my hands and wrists. Highly recommend. *** I just can't seem to make this thing work. I eventually figured out that it will lock onto the can automatically when i start turning the knob, but no matter what I do, I can't get it to release when it's done cutting. I fight with it EVERY time until it just finally pops the lid off. Love that the can edge isn't sharp when using this, but I didn't think things through very well when I bought it. I only need it for cans of tuna and when using this opener, I can't press the kid into the can to drain the liquid out. Now I have to dirty a strainer, as well. BUT, it cuts beautifully. Very easy on my hands and wrist.

Safety can opener

Great can opener works smoothly and does not expose dangerous cutting edges from the cans! Safety for children and adults. Easy to use, nice grip and seems to be very durable. Side note - made in China

The grabber doesn't grab

Tried to open multiple cans, each time I can't pull the top off because the grabber isn't holding on. Had to use a knife to open my cans five times now

The PERFECT can opener!

I wish I could give this can opener 100 stars!!!!!!! My husband and I are retired, and both have pain issues in our hands. We've always used a manual can opener, but just recently had to buy an electric one because it became too difficult for us. This opener lasted exactly 4 months, then quit working. I'm SO happy to have found this product. It is beyond easy...and opens cans so effortlessly and cleanly. The ergonomic design is perfect, and even works for my extremely small hands. I hope it lasts, but i would be willing to buy this again if needed, as it works SO WELL. This would make a great gift too!
