Scandal and intrigue on a small Army post in Georgia
Paul Brenner is a Warrant Officer in the Army but more important he's an investigator for the CID - Criminal Investigation Division. He's on undercover duty at Fort Hadley, Georgia working on stopping the sale of weapons by the post supply sergeant. He gets called in to investigate another case though - the high profile murder of the Commanding General's daughter. Also called in on the case is CID investigator Cynthia Sunhill, a rape specialist and also a woman that Paul had a prior tempestuous relationship with. Both were nearby when the murder occurred.I had read this book years ago. I am a Nelson DeMille fan and this book is a favorite of mine. I enjoyed it this time around just as much as the first time.DeMille has a talent for creating intelligent but smart alecky protagonists and Brenner definitely fills that role. He and Sunhill work nonstop to find the killer of this young troubled woman but have great, back-and-forth verbal battles while following up all clues.DeMille's prior military service definitely shows in this story, making the military day to day functions and jargon very believable.Twisty, lurid storyline; fun, snarky characters - another winner from DeMille.

Even Better Than The Movie!
I saw the movie version of the book years ago and enjoyed it. Rewatching the movie version again fairly recently inspired me to get a copy of the book. As good as the movie was, the book is much, much better. Mr. DeMille writes a very detailed orientated book. As they say "the devil is in the details." If you enjoy a well written, well researched story I think you will like this book too. It is a very good read and hard to put down. I've read it twice now, and agree that John Travolta was a perfect selection for the part of the DSI agent in the movie. It's a great book.

Excellent
This is one that you can't stop reading. It is about the greatest of all betrayals. It is also about anger and resentment and repeated acts of vengeance in addition to sorrow. All of this wrapped in a military base that is full of anger and acts unbecoming to an officer involving darn near every officer on the base. Warren officer Brenner has a smart mouth to match his smart mind and he finds he will be working with Warrent officer Cynthia Sunhill who he just happened to have a fling with in Brussels a year or so previously that didn't end very happily. I greatly enjoyed this book and plan on reading more by this author.

Great Story Line!
This was my first DeMille book, and I found it thoroughly enjoyable. The story has a great plot and the suspense kept my attention the entire way. DeMille's knowledge of how the army functions came through loud and clear. Being an army veteran myself, I was able to relate to much of what the characters were saying, doing, and thinking as the story unfolded. DeMille packs a lot of detail into approximately 500 pages. A very good read, especially for people with a bit of knowledge about the military and how it functions. Won't disappoint!

One of DeMille's Best
This is DeMille at his best. He does have a tendency to waffle with his quality, but certain of his books hit the mark, such as, Mayday, Plum Island, Gold Coast, and The Lions Game. Additionally, the principal character in this story, as well as John Sutter in The Gold Coast, sound like his John Corey character throughout; and if you read enough of his stories, the character traits can become tiresome. This particular book was made into a movie, which I did not see. The book, however, had a very intense story line, but could be found revolting to some who are sensitive to a plot involving unusual sexual practices as a psychological plot foundation. Nonetheless, this murder mystery set on a fictitious US Army post is well done.

Great mystery
A fast paced and well-developed plot and characters. The murder is a bit out there and some might find uncomfortable with the sexual nature. There is a 'love-story' included in this novel, that adds another dimension. The novel takes place on an army base in Georgia. For those of us unfamiliar with an army base, the description of the base becomes necessary to unwinding the events leading to the murder. And key to the murder are the rules and hierarchy of how the soldiers are supposed to act. Excellent.

Type too small
The book was smaller than I expected therefore the type was too small to read. I returned the book. Was fortunate the local library had a regular sized book and the type was easy to read.

Rubbish
Like virtually everything written by De Mille, the plot is ridiculous and drawn out, the witty one liners aren't one bit witty, the characters are cardboard and the dialogue is unconvincing. Not quite as dire as The Cuban Affair but a total load of rubbish in my opionion

A really enjoyable read
I really enjoyed this book, despite having read its sequel, ‘Up County’, first. ‘Up County’ is one of my favorite DeMille books, so I was a little reticent to try this, in case it in any way diminished my very positive perception of the main protagonist from both stories, Paul Brenner. I needn't have worried. As with the vast majority of his ‘older’ work (I am not a fan of the latest 'Panther' book, for instance), The General’s Daughter builds a very detailed plot but still manages to maintain a fast pace throughout. Even if you've seen the ‘Big Screen’ adaptation, starring John Travolta, you’ll still get a great deal from reading the novel. All in all, despite not being DeMille's very best, I’d thoroughly recommend.

Worth reading
I started reading this author with the John Cory books. Whilst these were well plotted and deftly written I became irritated by Cory's constant interjections which served only to detract from the storyline. The General 's Daughter predates the Cory series and the main character, Paul Brenner, although very similar to Cory is far more likeable. The book tackles the serious issue of how women are treated in the Armed Forces and is a cracking story in its own right. Well worth reading.

Excellent book
I like all of this authors books. I have seen the film and knowing the ending made it less exciting, but it was well written, witty and well thought out and a good story. The only trouble is I always see John Travolta now as this character in my head!

Good and entertaining read.
US Army CID investigation of what initially appears to be the murder and rape of a female officer. Plot full of twists that keep you guessing until the end.
