The Tempest: No Fear Shakespeare Side-by-Side Plain English (Volume 5)

Sparknotes knows how to make a translation. While it seems a little awkward at times you atleast understand what the heck they are saying, which I have always struggled with with original Shakespeare. I finished the book in one day, really just three hours, and if there's anything in a book I don't understand I will read it constantly until I figure it out, which greatly slows me down. At the end it's still shakespeare you are reading, so take that as you will, but you certainly won't have to worry about being confused.

I’m a teacher and had a student transfer to my class halfway through the play. Knowing that I would not be able to completely get him caught up quickly enough before our Shakespeare unit ended, I purchased this book. It was SO helpful! He read the book, was able to understand the first half of the play that he missed, and then was able to better understand the remainder of the play. I think it helped him succeed even beyond many of my students who had been through the whole unit with me!I highly recommend for anyone teaching this play.

This book is so good for early Shakespeare readers. That it because it has the modern text on one side and the original text on the other. This book is also a really good story.

Great way to understand the Shakespeare. I wish the authors had been a little bit more creative when translating the insults. Every insult in modern English is a swear.

Awesome play. Considered Shakespeare's last play written solo. Henry VIII, The Two Noble Kinsmen came after but Shakespeare co-wrote these with John Fletcher. When reading this you can really see how Shakespeare has mastered his skill as a playwright. Unlike many of his other plays, The Tempest follows the Aristotelian unities of time, place, and action. Like with many of his plays Shakespeare gives us a comical subplot poking fun at the main plot. This is very interesting as it also effectively pokes fun at colonialism. While I would not suggest this as your first read in Shakespeare, I would still call it a 'must read' when studying Shakespeare.

Shakespeare- what else is there to say?

This guide is very simple to follow along, compared to the Old English versions. My sister purchased this edition for her class, and it has greatly helped her to make sense of the writing, rather than to have her mind boggled. The side by side of the original and the modern text, once its able to be grasped the meanings and the contexts, really does allows one to appreciate the beauty of the play and the writings.

Excellent companion for Shakespeare study, received in excellent condition. Good legible print on good quality pages, add the apt binding makes it possibly one of the best available.

Having studied The Tempest many years ago at A Level, all I can say is that I wish this book had existed then. The "translation" is printed directly opposite the original text and makes straight reading of the play very easy indeed - no more turning to the back of the book for notes, or constantly referring to footnotes. Of course, if you're studying the play in depth you'll need much more guidance on Shakespeare's subtleties, double meanings, use of prose v poetry etc. etc. However, you'll still get enjoyment and understanding from this book, giving you a solid platform on which to build. Use it alongside (say) the RSC's excellent complete works and you'll soon find yourself appreciating and understanding the Bard's language like never before.Some may find the translation too American here and there, but "The Tempest" is a wonderful work and anything that makes it more accessible to a wider public gets my vote.
