The Why and What of Great Lent for Orthodox and non-Orthodox
This book was recommended to me, and I whole heartedly recommend it to anyone who is seeking to understand this most sacred and precious period in the church year. Although it is written from an Eastern Orthodox perspective, being a former protestant myself, I found it not only informative but inspiring and convicting. I have a Masters degree in Divinity, but I learned things about the meaning and significance of Lent that I was never taught nor learned. Did you know the concept of Lent and the fasting affiliated with Lent is directly tied to what happened in the Garden? Alexander Schmemann makes the connection in a way that will make everyone rethink their view on Lent.

Blessed Pascha
I love this little book. Alexander Schmemann has written others and has also contributed, but this little book is perfect for Great Lent. I do have to say that it is geared toward the Orthodox faithful with regard to Great Lent and Pascha. If you are eager to learn why we keep Traditional ways, or if you want to understand why we fast, pray and continue to love our Church, then read this. It explains about Presanctified Liturgy, and how we connect our Lenten journey with our Faith.I have given Great Lent to Godchildren as well as other books of Tradition and Faith. They always give (me) feedback, their opinion is not always the same as my own, but so far, Great Lent is a book we agree that helps us each and every year on our Journey to Pascha.Blessed Pascha everyone.

It completely changed my understanding of Great Lent.
Sadly Fr. Schmemann passed away 25 years ago, but his impact as the greatest modern Orthodox theologian lives on. This book is a seriously written theological work, but it's easily understood by the ordinary lay person as well as the theologian. Fr. Schmemann explains clearly and carefully the place and purpose of Great Lent and dispels the myth that it's merely another period of observances and self-denials as Roman Catholics practise. To Orthodox Catholics it's part of a complete attitude and way of life, and the relationship of Great Lent to Pascha and the rest of the year and to the life of the Church is well explained in this book. After reading it cover to cover I was left awestruck. Other than the Bible itself, if you never read another book, read this one. It will change your whole attitude toward life, I guarantee it.
