Hi, I would say it works well. Please watch this video, we recorded it while we were at the seaside using this monocular with the included hand strap and smartphone adapter(not included).

Hi, the closest focus distance is 9.8 feet. We took this video while bird watching. Since the bird is very alert, we tried our best to get close to it. Even at about 16 feet, you can see it very clearly!
