Q: How does this unit physically hookup to track hours of the engine?

It wraps around a spark plug wire and based upon each time the spark plug fires, the unit figures out much time has elapsed in increments of 1/10 of an hour. It operates upon a principle of induction in order to sense the spark from the plug wire.

Q: Will this work if you wire it on a 220v romex wire? I want to time my water heater.

this wraps around the spark plug wire of a small engine. it wire not work for you needs. I suggest something like a watt meter

Q: I understand the unit is sealed and the battery can not be changed, so what is the life of the battery in it?
