Review: Enjoyable book for 13 Year old. He found it a bit for solemn and thought provoking than some other stuff he’d read! Review: I really appreciated thinking about this aspect of war (whether to euthanize or keep pets), and the emotionally intelligent behaviour that kids tend to demonstrate more easily than adults, as well as the mistakes that can be made when you act impulsively. Even city-dwelling kids can do amazing things (without the support/safety of parents) when motivated by love, and you don't have to get the facts right or stick to the plan, either, to reach your goal. I did feel as if the kids spoke more like 21st century kids than those of the actual time, but maybe that's a good thing, if it means that it will be more accessible to modern readers. This was recommended by the Arthur Ransome Society's Book Club, and I think it's a good choice as it explores similar themes in a more contemporary way. I'll be interested to read more of Phil's work.

My 11yr old son really enjoyed this book which took me by surprise as it’s quite a contrast from the wimpy kid. Would recommend!
